One of the most versatile vocalists of recent times, Sutapa Bhattacharya started singing in accurate pitch at the age of just four. Born in a musical family, Sutapa started taking her musical talim at the age of only two and a half years from her mother Smt. Manjushree Bhattacharjee and her father Shri Sunil Bhattacharjee.

At the age of four she could sing the songs of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay, Arati Mukhopadhyay, Pratima Bandopadhyay and Nirmala Mishra. Sutapa is learning Indian vocal music since then.

Through her childhood she was lucky to have the privilege of growing along with her brother, internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Pandit Debasish Bhattacharya and Shri Subasish Bhattacharya, the renowned Tabla player.

She is the disciple of Pandit Ajoy Chakroborty, Smt. Shubhra Guha, Smt. Nirmala Mishra and Sri Biman Mukhopadhay, and has served as a faculty member of “Shrutinandan”. She has done her masters in vocal music and has taken her lessons from many more renowned musical gurus like Shri Pintu Bhattacharjee, Shri Chandi Das Maal and Dr. Utpala Goswami.

Sutapa is a graded vocalist of Prasar Bharati. She is a regular performer in All India Radio, Dooradarshan and other TV channels.

She is a versatile singer, equally comfortable in all forms of Indian music- semi classical, light, modern, folk, tagore, ghazal and bhajan. Her versatility touches almost all chapters of North Indian vocal music. From Hindustani classical, semi classical to devotional songs, Tagore’s songs, modern songs to north Indian folk songs.

She performs regularly live on stage. Her performing ability is being applauded in the country as well as abroad. She has been honoured as the best vocalist in international music festivals of Canada, when she kept an audience of twenty thousand people spellbound. Sutapa has also performed in many cities of Japan, the USA, Canada & Thailand.

On 24th July 2000, her performance was telecast in the world beat television show of CNN.

Some of Sutapa's acclaimed live performances include Asian Fantasy, 1996, Tokyo, Japan; Winnipeg Summer Festival 2000, Canada; Quebec City Folk Festival 2000, Canada; Rabindra Sangeet solo in 2005 at Mumbai, A USA - Canada Tour in 2006, World Music Festival, 2007, Thailand, Chinese new year celebration in 2007 at Bangkok, Thailand and many more.

Her album “Mahima” was released in the year 2003 in 36 countries by World Music Network of United Kingdom, she sang four songs in the album and was the only vocalist along with other noted Indian and American musicians who performed in the album.

Her albums contain collections of songs which express various moods of Bengali feelings of romance, sorrow and joy in different spheres of life. These albums act as a bridge between golden past of Bangla gaan and today’s multicultural musical scenario.
