Kolkata, March 11, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): Timangshu Dhulia, after a huge critical success of ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ returns with the sequel of ‘Saheb Biwi aur Gangster’ in the form of ‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’.

The film is a true sequel to the first one which closes with ‘Saheb’ Aditya Pratap Singh (Jimmy Sheirgill) getting wheel-chair bound after being shot badly in his waist. The first film also had shown his wife (Mahi Gill), the ‘Biwi’, being elected as the MLA of the area after shooting dead the previous gangster (Ranadeep Hooda).

The second film of the franchise begins with Biwi, i.e Madhavi, despite being married to the ‘Saheb’, having absolutely no marital relationship with him and being ignored. She has turned to alcohol and has made it her constant companion.

In the meantime Aditya gets to a crossroad with other leaders of various princely states over political issues, especially with his Boney Uncle (Raj Babbar). To keep things under his control, he arranges for the arrest of Boney’s Son in Dubai with a fake drug case. He uses blackmail therapy to get engaged to Boney’s daughter Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan). Ranjana had a lover named Inderjit (Irrfan Khan) who is the ‘Gangster’ in this film. Inder also has royal ancestry and his ancestors were destroyed by those of Aditya’s. Now after Ranjana is forced into marriage with Aditya, Inderjit has more than enough reason to wage war against him.

Inderjit is a shrewed man who knows every game of the arena. On his mission, he seduces the ‘Biwi’ and influences her to get some political steps taken in his favour. He also uses his brother (Pravesh Rana), a cop, to destroy those who come in his way. The ‘gangster’ in this movie is also a big ‘prankster’ unlike the one in the previous film. He poses as a journalist, royalty, businessman and politician as required in different situations.

But things go wrong for him when one night his beloved Ranjana watches him have sex with Madhavi. Ranjana now comes closer to Aditya after being impressed by his chivalry.

Dissapointed by Inderjit’s behavior Ranjana starts lending support to Aditya about which Inderjit remains unaware. What happens next is what the rest of the film is all about.

Timangshu Dhulia has once again demonstrated his directorial skill in captivating the audience. He has brought out the best from the actors just like the way he handled cinematographer Yogesh Jani.

The director has been backed by some powerful performances. Irrfan Khan as usual has delivered a stellar performance as the cunning man eyeing his revenge. The same goes for Mahie Gill who is a revelation as the estranged wife who remains almost always in an inebriated condition and has no objections playing bedroom games to realize her ambitions. Jimmy Sheirgill also holds his place as the Saheb who is ironwilled and just as shrewd. Soha Ali Khan has little scope to act and her role in the film as well as her scope to perform are limited.

The film, though a bit too long by present standards, is at the least a good one to watch, and is actually a treat for those who love bloody dramas spiced with lusty extra-marital affairs and power games.
