Kolkata, March 9, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga is a story about the effects of price rise in the lives of a family of four members. The story begins with the family members trying to find ways to make ends meet.

Puttanpal (Sanjay Mishra), Noori (Pragati Pandey), Nagpal (Vishwa Mohan Badola) and Gopal (Ranjan Chhabra) are the family members who try their level best to survive in this age where the prices of necessary commodities are rising by leaps and bounds. Puttanpal is a Government employee and works with the Pashu Prajnan Kendra (Animal Breeding Centre). Even after working as a Government employee, the financial troubles of his family do not decrease. Nagpal is Puttanpal’s father who cannot remember the last time he had feasted on good food. Puttanpal’s wife Noori is the owner of a beauty parlor which is located next to their house. She gives beauty tips and also some extra spicy tips to her customers at the parlor. Gopal is Puttanpal’s younger brother who has been trying to graduate from high-school for some time now and has been failing every time. However he is the darling of Puttanpal’s father. When things go astray and the family cannot sustain themselves, a colleague of Puttanpal gives them an idea - to store rations for the coming three years. What happens next and how the family fights inflation is the crux of the story.

Director Anshul Sharma’s first attempt must be appreciated as he took up a very relevant subject in contemporary India. His portrait of people who have been having a hard time managing their finances is very poignant. As the director, he has not been able to tackle the subject single-handedly as many of us would have liked him to do. The relevance of the subject gets lost in the not-so-good performances of some of the supporting actors in the film. Another flaw is in the story itself - based in Sonepat, Haryana. The weather in this place is very hot and even thinking of stocking three years worth of ration is not at all a good option even in these times of price hikes. The long lecture at the climax on price rise may also make some in the audience yawn.

Sanjay Mishra as Puttanpal is credible in his role as the middle aged person who is trying hard to tackle the effects of inflation. Vishwa Mohan Badola as old man Nagpal delivers another top notch performance. Pragati Pandey does nothing spectacular in the acting department. She just increases the beauty quotient in this film. Ranjan Chhabra as the brother of Puttanpal delivers a substandard performance when compared with the other actors. Zakir Hussain as the loan inspector does his job well.

Theatrical Trailer With New Posters: Saare Jaahan Se Mehnga

The film does give us a few opportunities to laugh our hearts out. But even then it falls flat on most aspects.
