Kolkata, March 2, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): ‘I, Me aur Main’ is an Indian Bollywood film that projects the damaging effects of Narcissism, especially when nurtured by a man.

Ishan (John Abraham) is acutely aware of the fact that he bears the looks of a Greek God and is irresistible to ladies around him. Thanks to his mother (played by Zarina Wahab) who, throughout the growing years of Ishan, has deeply ingrained a belief in him that he is special. He keeps himself far away from any kind of commitment though he is in a relation with Anushka (Chitrangada Singh) and is also living at his girlfriend’s apartment for three years. The insensitive guy never pays a penny towards expenditures though he has a decent job in a music company. Instead he keeps himself busy flirting with other girls. When Anushka has enough of it and realizes that things are not going to change, she ejects Ishan from his apartment as well from her life.

Ishan moves to another home and comes across a chirpy neighbor Gauri (Prachi Desai), a pretty and bubbly designer. He finds Gauri a bit different from other girls as she can slam hard words on his face and can bluntly reject him, something he is not used to.  Ishan slowly falls in love with Gauri who keeps on pointing the irritating narcissist quality in him.

Meanwhile he loses his job following a face-off with his boss (Raima Sen) and a failed blackmail plan. More shockers follow as news reaches him about Anushka being pregnant with his child. What happens next forms the climax of the film.

The film has both highs and lows. A beautiful star cast, a touching story with some peppy sequences and decent performances from the three leading stars are the highs. John is finally betraying indications of maturing as an actor. Emoting to express ones love for oneself is not easy and John has pulled that off convincingly. Surely a lot of home work on bodylanguage and facial expressions were needed for that.

Chitrangada Singh has once again proven her caliber as an actress, and why her dazzling beauty is only one aspect of her powerful performances. Prachi Desai fit the bill quite well with her lively portrayal of ‘Miss know-it-all’.

Casting Zarina Wahab as the doting mother of John and Mini Mathur as John’s protecting sister has worked well.

But Raima Sen and Sameer Soni have not been given enough screen time for the roles to develop completely.

However, debutant director Kapil Sharma leaves some questions unanswered. How John turned a new singer into a star so quickly and easily is never revealed. But Kapil Sharma does pull off the unexpected climax very well.

Music in the film is quite good and offers a couple of good melodious songs and a party number.

The film has the potential to hold on to the movie theaters for some time and is quite watchable. After all, there is a lot of space between Cult films and Unwatchable films.
