Social issues addressed by Prakash Jha’s movie ‘Aarakshan’

Mumbai, March 23, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / Kreation Guru) Ace director Prakash Jha is all set to stir the societal norms with his upcoming social drama ‘Aarakshan’ that is currently being shot in the picturesque locations of Bhopal. The film revolves around the taboos of caste reservations that were enforced by the Mandal Commission. ‘Aarakshan’ is slated for a release on August 12 this year.

Under the banner of Prakash Jha productions, this film stars superstar Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. Actors Prateik Babbar, Tanvi Azmi and Manoj Bajpayee will be seen in supporting roles. The actress with poise and Big B’s favourite co-star Hema Malini will be seen in a cameo role in the film. Hema and Amitabh would be seen together after four years. Their last film together was Babul in 2006.

In a candid interview, director Prakash Jha confessed that his films have always been a manifestation of long years of thoughts and ideas put together. ‘Aarakshan’ had been in his mind for the last five years. Putting all rumours aside, Jha confirmed that though the film deals with a sensitive issue of reservations in India, it would not support any one group. Rather the film aims to dig into the pros and cons of the system and be a neutral showcase for people who are victims of this.

Bhopal has been Jha’s favourite place since he completed ‘Raajneeti’ here. He says that people here have been very co-operative and it is always a pleasure to be back. There are more reasons to rejoice than just this. Bhopal also happens to be Saif Ali Khan’s native place and Big B’s sasuraal. According to sources, Big B has been hosted really well by his mother-in-law since the star arrived here for shooting.

The storyline of the film evolves in a college campus where Bachchan plays the role of a professor while Deepika Padukone happens to be his daughter. Chote Nawaab will be seen in a completely different avatar in this film…….yes and you heard it right………a doodhwala! Saif plays the role of a dairy farm owner and would be seen milking buffaloes and cows quite often. When asked, Jha was in total praise for the actor. He said that Saif Ali Khan’s role was initially offered to Ajay Devgan but the director felt that Saif was a versatile actor and would suit the role better. Saif has been toiling hard for his character and has even taken lessons on milking of cattle.

The film hit the floors on January 15 this year and Jha has chosen the residential colony of Menal City as his shooting location. The college scenes would be shot in Oriental college of Bhopal and it would be named the Shakuntala Thackral College in the film. When asked about the romantic twist in the film, Jha confirmed that there would be no intimate scenes between Saif and Deepika in the film.

‘Aarakshan’ definitely seems to be emerging as one of the strongest films to be released this year. Whether this social drama appeals to the masses is what would be an interesting thing to look out for.
