Hritik, Katrina, and Gang Celebrate Holi... Spain Style!

March 20, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / Pen Men at Work): Many have brought the colours of life to the big screen by recreating the festival of Holi in their movies. But this is one of a kind. Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, which has extensive scenes shot in Spain, has brought alive the Spanish festival of Tomatina in the movie. The festival sees people throwing ripe tomatoes on each other, and thus the lead actors of the movie – Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol, among others – were caught in a tomato fight!

The festival is closest to India’s Holi, the only difference being the use of product to play the sport and the predominance of one colour – red- in Tomatina, instead of many in Holi. However, interestingly, the shoot for the sequence was not taken during one of the original festival. The director had to pour in about a crore rupees, and more than a dozen tonne of tomatoes, apart from 24 tonnes of puree.

The actors must have had a blast during the sequence, as the city of Bunol, where the shoot took place, actually stopped to let the director take the scene. Thus, a bloody red, but completely fun scene is a scene to look forward to in the soon to be released film. The film tells the tale of friends who are travelling in Spain. And with this sequence, India will get to know that tomatoes can be used for more reasons than that of booing away someone!
