Asia's biggest and the world's largest non-trade book fair, the Calcutta Book Fair has recently generated controversy regarding the venue of the event. The Publishers and Booksellers' Guild, organizers of the book fair, were forced to move the venue from the traditional Calcutta Maidan to Salt Lake in 2007 after a court order based on an environmental complaint. Subsequently, due to accessability problems for the Salt Lake venue, the Calcutta Book Fair was held at Milan Mela Prangan situated on the EM Bypass -  an  alternative venue developed by the West Bengal State Government for the event.
