JENANA: Saswata Chatterjee to Turn Transgender - New Bangla Movie Preview

Kolkata, Feb 14 (Washington Bangla Radio) - Saswata Chatterjee is leaving no character unexplored on screen. From Topshe to Feluda films to Ajit in Byomkesh series, from polite killer in ‘Kaahani’ to tough cop in ‘Proloy’, from witty detective in Ebar Shabor to Psycho killer in 89, the actor has played every role with elan. Now Saswata will portray the role of a transgender in his upcoming film Jenana.

Jenana, which is being directed by debutante director Barshali Chatterjee revolves around the life of transgender community members who are commonly known as ‘Hijra’ or ‘Jenana’ in India. The film explores the hardship the community members have to go through as they have no social acceptance.

The film also delves deeps into the fact that how some men change their social identity and mix in this group for a livelihood.

The story of the film unwinds as a young filmmaker Riya sets out to make a film on the transgender community. Riya is an assistant director in Mega-serials and is craving to prove herself by delivering something different. Thus she has taken up this subject for her film.

During her research Riya meets such a transgender named Sumana. As Riya interacts with the Jenana in an attempt to discover her background, stunning reality is unearthed. It is revealed that the transgender community has more secrets than what meets the eye.

Saswata Chatterjee plays the role of Shomu aka Sumana while Priyanka Sarkar will be seen as Riya, the young filmmaker.

Sampurna Lahiri will get into the skin of a village girl and will have a de-glam look in the film. The film also stars Sanker Chakraborty, Kharaj Mukherjee, Kanchan Mallick and Rupanjana Mitra in pivotal roles.

Barshali who is one of the youngest directors in the Bengali film Industry has reportedly done a lot of research on the transgender community for this film. Barshali has previously worked as an assistant director in a few films and television series. According to sources, she has drawn the character of Riya in the line of her own self.

The music of the film has been composed by Debojyoti Mishra.
