Jyoti Singh

Washington, DC, Feb 27, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): Jyoti Singh (WBRi Interview) was born in Dehra Dun, UP, India.  She moved to the USA in 1987.  After completing high school and college, she moved to New York.  She comes from an affluent background.  Her father is an ex-engineer commanding officer who served in the Indian Army and her mother comes from the Royal Family of Mahiar, MP.  She has two sisters, Ketki and Gauri Singh, and is married to a physician.  From very early on, Jyoti wanted to help the people in this world and make a difference in society, so she ended up graduating with a Nursing Degree.  Before entering the acting world, she worked for American Red Cross, then a psychiatrist and then a speech pathologist.

Jyoti started her acting career full time in 2009.  While working she started taking classes in several studios in NYC. She later went to NYFA and also did a summer camp with legendary Acting guru Professor Roshan Taneja and the highly respected Indian fim actor Tom Alter.

She is the lead actress of the award winning film, 9 Eleven, and was also nominated as Best Actress for her performance.  She has acted in several independent films in supporting roles, has done TV hosting, and has also done commercials, industrials, music video, and web series.   She recently experienced acting in India for the well-known TV series Adaalat and Fear Files (in Sony TV and Zee TV).  She is in talks with several directors for films, and is working on her sister's venture, "The Humble Princess."

She is a co founder of a non profit organization, RVP charitable, and has spent time making school visits, human right centers and volunteering.  Spiritually, she considers Amma her guru (i.e. the "Hugging Saint") and says Amma is inspiration for humanitarian efforts.  Jyoti's hobbies are singing, for which she learns Hindustani classical music from Sanjukta Sen, who herself is a student of Girija Devi. In her free time, Jyoti takes yoga classes and enjoys cooking.

Last year she took part in Varli Cook-Off and this year, decided to participate in South Asian Talent Contest, in Mrs. Category.  Although she does not believe she has a "model look," she advocates experimenting and being active.  She believes it is not about winning, that it is about experience, learning, and enjoying and living the moment. She takes challenges in life, as they come to her.
