Hansel & Gretel : Witch Hunters is a gory delight (Film Review)

Film Poster: Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)

Mumbai, Feb 1, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio): Hollywood has been obsessed with re-working all our childhood fairytales, and facing audiences with an onslaught of refurbished, re-worked, re-spun fairytales. While some have worked, many have been quite a miss. Hansel & Gretel : Witch Hunters, however, is one of those rare re-spun fairytales that does not take away from our childhood memories of the tale, instead, it quite adds to it!

Hansel & Gretel are all grown up, and have become a pair of leather clad, weapon wielding, professional witch hunters that are immune to the witches’ curses. The movie is full of bone-crushing and heart ripping, done in such a way that the audience cheers for joy! Each witch is extremely varied in gait, size and appearance, and people are left wondering how they’ll be bought to their death, each time! Hansel & Gretel succeed in making you root for them and the spectacular job done by the make-up & costume department on the witches just adds to it.

The duo is on a mission to save 12 children become the sacrificial lambs of a witches’ ritual. Jeremy Renner pulls of his role with much panache, his experience with a cross-bow makes him that much more believable. Gemma Arterton as the hard-core witch slayer with an impressionable heart touches base with the audiences. The big bad witch, played by Famke Janssen presents a formidable opponent to the deadly duo, and she plays the negative character so well that audiences can’t help but smile when she loses. The screenplay is fantastic, Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola keeps the pace high throughout the movie, and there isn’t a dull moment.

All in all, it is a fantastic watch, with one key takeaway – a line mouthed by Jeremy Renner – ‘Just don’t eat the ******* candy’.

Watch the trailer.
