Calcutta, Feb 14, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) International Mother Language Day is an observance held annually on 21 February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. It was first announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999. International Mother Language Day originated as the international recognition of Language Movement Day, which has been commemorated in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since 1952.

Students of University of Dhaka along with other students were killed by the Pakistani police in Dhaka during Bengali Language Movement protests.

Many organizations observe this day through out the World. As a tribute to International Mother Language Day a Bi-cycle Rally is organized by … 100 Miles, from Kolkata to Dhaka, from 12.2 .12 to 21.2.12. This event is supported by Youth Services Department, Government of West Bengal and Bangladesh Government.

Inauguration and flag off ceremony was attended by Mr. Arup Biswas, Minister In charge of Youth Services, Government of West Bengal, Ms. Gargi Banerjee, Chairperson BCCI , Women Cricket National Selection Committee, Mr. Sanku Deb Panda, Eminent Student Activist and Mr. Goutam Ghosh , Internationally Famous Film Director at Kolkata Press Club. To mark the occasion Chandan Saurav the organizers also created a wonderful theme song.  Chandan is leading the team of cyclist. The enthusiastic participants will attend different Functions at Bangladesh. They are receiving warm welcome from large number of people as they are proceeding towards their destination.
