Maya-Sonia in hot pursuit of Uttar Pradesh



Lucknow, Feb 1 (IBNS): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati and Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi kick-started the campaign in the politically crucial heartland state of northern India on Wednesday  with both the leaders exchanging barbs.

Mayawati slammed Congress while addressing a rally in Sitapur  area as she said: "The Congress is only giving false hope to the minority community." 

She said that the Congress is playing the 'divide and rule policy in the state by playing the OBC sub-quota card.

"It is a conspiracy by the Congress to play divide and rule with OBC sub-quota," she alleged.

She said that the wrong economic policies of Congress was responsible for the dismal state of Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati is scheduled to address 30 rallies in the upcoming days. She is scheduled to address another rally in Barabanki area later in the day.

On the other hand, Sonia Gandhi started her poll-bound  rallies in Uttar Pradesh by addressing at Gonda on Wednesday.

She said that if the Congress comes to power in the north Indian state then the government will bring all round 'development' in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier on Tuesday, Congress released a manifesto for the upcoming Assembly election in the politically charged UP making a promise to create 20 lakh jobs in the state in next five years if voted to power after decades.

The manifesto promised to give 50 percent reservation for women in panchayat elections. 

The manifesto also stated that every SC/ST family members would be given Rs 10,000 at time of their daughters' wedding. The manifesto also promised that all SC/ST families below poverty line would get free electricity connections.

The Congress promised that an equitable solution will be provided to the controversial Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.

The Congress also promised that it will ensure that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will probe into the MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee) scam.

UP is going to witness a highly charged assembly poll with Congress going all out to regain its lost ground in the heartland state as party leader Rahul Gandhi devoting full time for the elections by challenging Mayawati while other important players are Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 

UP is going to polls on Feb 8, Feb 11, Feb 15, Feb 19, Feb 23, Feb 28 and March 3.

Counting of votes is on March 6 along with all four other states that are going to elections.
