APARAJITA - Prosenjit’s next destination of success

Kolkata, Feb 23, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / Kreation Guru) Actor Prasenjit Chatterjee is the most ‘in demand’ these days in Tolly para. After successful films like Autograph and Moner Manush, Bumba da has his plates full. He has recently finished shooting for the upcoming movie ‘Paapi’ and is now all set for Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s ‘Aparajita’. Aniruddha or Tony, as he is fondly addressed by all, is the proud maker of national award winning films like Antaheen and Anuronon. He said that working with Prosenjit would be like a ‘dream come true’ for him.

‘Aparajita’ is inspired by writer and novelist Sunil Gangopadhyay’s ‘Dui Naari Haathey Torobaari’ and revolves around the life of two women who turn into opponents after a long association of friendship. The twist in the story comes up when one of these women end up seducing the other’s husband. As mentioned by the director, the film discovers the loneliness that exists in today’s times and how it takes a toll over life. The story is based in the US and would be extensively shot in picturesque locations of San Francisco.

The director has chosen two debutant faces for the roles of the two women----Tamil actress Padmapriya Janakiraman and Telegu actress Kamalinee Mukherji. While Padmapriya would be seen in the role of an introvert lady, Kamalinee would be the more outspoken and bold one. Though both the actresses have their roots in Bengal, this would be their first Bengali film ever. Though Aniruddha wanted Bollywood actresses Rani Mukherji and Vidya Balan for the roles, he ultimately finalized Padma and Kamalinee after meeting them at the last National Awards.

Under the banner of director Shoojit Sircar’s Rising Sun Films, Aniruddha has big dreams for ‘Aparajita’. In an interview, he revealed that ‘Aparajita’ might be the first Bengali movie to be released on a global scale. Among others, cinematographer Ranjan Palit of ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ and music director Shantanu Moitra would be a part of this film. Though the film has a small budget, director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has plans of shooting at international locations of Lake Tahoe, Montrose and San Jose. The film would be going on the floors by the end of March this year.

Kamalinee Mukherji made her debut in acting in 2004 with the film ‘Phir Milenge’ where she played the role of AIDS afflicted Shilpa Shetty’s younger sibling. She came into limelight when she won accolades for her role as Rupa in Telegu film ‘Anand’. Kamalinee says that she is a die-hard fan of Proshenjit and is highly excited about working with the Tolly superstar. They play the role of Ushoshi and Pradeep who are the protagonists of the film. On the other hand, National Award felicitated actress Padmapriya is an established Tamil star and has around thirty films in her kitty. She would be essaying the role of Kuhu in ‘Aparajita’. The other male lead would be played by theatre actor Chandan Roy Sanyal of ‘Kaminey’ fame. Aniruddha’s lucky mascot Rahul Bose might be seen in a cameo role in the film.

‘Aparajita’ definitely belongs to the ‘slightly different’ modern league of films. As the director puts it, it is a celebration and introspection of relationships and their complexities. There is nothing more satisfying than exploring the mysterious depths of inter-personal bonds and the void that exists among the crowd. Aniruddha says that he doesn’t make films for awards but ‘Aparajita’ might complete a hat trick for him in terms of ‘A’ lettered films and National awards…….all the best Tony!
