Subhomoy Mukherjee's Original Review of PAA (2009) Hindi Movie

Paa (2009) Poster4th December, 2009 is the milestone for Indian Filmdom specially Bollywood as the day has experienced Living Legend, most respected actor of Bollywood, Yesteryear Angry Hero, Amitabh Bachchan as the son of his own son, Abhisek Bachchan and Glamourous Sensuos Vidya Balan in the movie “Paa”.

Directed by R. Balakrishnan, Paa is unique in nature as it deals with the disease “Progeria” that causes accelerated aging that means a Progerian Child always looks alike 5 to 6 times older to his own age. Paa is the movie from the league of Bollywood creations dealing not only with terror , violence or prototype Mills or Boon love stories but commercial Big Budget movies with topics to give message to the society.

The real Hero of the movie is Auro ( Amitabh Bachchan ), an intelligent, witty 13 year old boy who suffers from an extremely rare genetic defect – Progeria. Mentally he is 13, very normal, but physically he looks 5 times older. In spite of his condition, Auro is a very happy boy. He lives with his mother Vidya(Vidya Balan), who is a gynaecologist. His father Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan), is young, progressive and a full of ideals, politician. He is out to prove to the world that 'politics' is not a bad word. Due to his political career, Amol left Vidya as pregnant when they were students and Vidya , under her mother’s guidance and help, gave birth to Auro and brought him up. Amol, without knowing Auro as his own baby, became affectionate to him due to his maturity and brilliance. From his mother, Auro came to know Amol as his father but his mother was very angry and reluctant with his father due to his betrayal to herself at the time of pregnancy. But before his death at the last scene, Auro was able to see his parents together again.

Definitely the film dealt with a very rare kind of theme with powerhouse performances by Vidya Balan, Abhisek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan and Arundhati Naag ( Vidya’s Mother ) and good musical score by Illiya Raja but the script itself is weak in nature. The Progerian never be so normal like Auro in reality. Not only that, single motherhood is still unacceptable in India. Portrayal of Abhisek as a politician also against what we experience in daily life.

But we are thankful to the Paa team for gifting as a movie with such a unique topic which is very difficult to handle.
