Guru Dutt (1925-1964), often credited for architecting the golden era of Bollywood Hindi cinema, is reported to have attempted suicide three times. A resident of Bhawanipur in Calcutta for some years, Guru Dutt spoke fluent Bangla and finished schooling in Calcutta. He would continue to retain Bengali cultural influences all his life.

Guru Dutt married Geeta Roy Dutt in 1953, and it is said the marriage was not a very happy one. Guru Dutt and actress Wahida Rahman had a romantic relationship outside Guru Dutt's marriage. Eventually, Geeta Dutt also died very young, at 41, succumbing to alcoholism.

Popular TV serial director Joy Mukherjee is directing his first full-length feature film titled "Hariye Jaye". The Bengali movie based on the life of Guru Dutt has a star cast of Abhishek Chatterjee, Gargi Roy Chowdhury, Nivedita and others.

Tollywood fresh face Nivedita plays Wahida Rahman.

According to Joy Mukherjee quoted in the Telegraph (link), the film is based on Dulendra Bhowmik’s novel Sundar which is about Guru Dutt's life and the love triangle.

Actor Abhishek Chatterjee said he studied the Guru Dutt classic Pyaasa (Buy DVD) to learn more about his role.

Hariye Jay is produced by Channel Eight Communications and is expected to have a March 2010 release date.
