Salil Chowdhury: New Project on Indian Music Maestro Marks 90th Birth Anniversary

Kolkata, Jan 21 (Washington Bangla Radio) - Legendary music composer Salil Chowdhury’s 90th birth anniversary was recently celebrated at Calcutta Rowing Club with announcement of a new project "The Salil Chowdhury Memorial - Concert and Honors."

A joint venture of Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers and The Salil Chowdhury Foundation, "The Salil Chowdhury Memorial - Concert and Honours" was revealed in a glorious ceremony.

The project includes an initiative to maintain and foster the legacy of Salil Chowdhury through various promotional events and concerts in collaboration with like-minded organizations.

A special calendar and website on Salil Chowudhury were also unveiled. The calendar was launched by Sabita Chowdhury, the late maestro’s  wife and veteran singer, and their daughter - singer Antara Chowdhury, along with Tollywood Bangla movie diva Rituparna Sengupta.

The calendar features precious monochrome images of the composer with some of his famous contemporary musicians and Bollywood stalwarts. An audio-visual presentation was also screened portraying Salil Chowdhury Memorial Concerts.

Salil Chowdhury passed away in September of 1995, leaving a vacuum in the Indian music industry that has little hope of being filled.

Antara Chowdury said, "my father was deeply inspired by Mozart and Beethoven, and would often jokingly say he was a reincarnation of Mozart.”

Attendees of the event included a whose-who of contemporary Kolkata music industry - Srijato, Joy Sarkar, Srikanta Acharya, Monomoy Bhattacharya, Rupankar Bagchi and others were all there.

The Director of Shyam Sundar Co. Jewelers Mr.Rupak Saha said he feels privileged for the opportunity to pay homage to the legendary  musician. "The heritage of a jewellery house extends beyond the four walls of the showroom. We have associated with the project because it is in sync with our vision of the rich cultural heritage which music and gold jewellery both hail from."

Salil Chowdhury had composed music for over 150 movies in various languages, and won several prestigious awards including Filmfare Best Music Director Award in 1958 for the film Madhumati. He is survived by his wife - singer Sabita Chowdhury, two daughters Antara and Sanchari Chowdhury and son Sanjoy Chowdhury.

Antara and Sanjoy are carrying their father's legacy in music forward. Antara is a performing artist and Sanjoy is a successful music composer by his own right in the Tollywood Bengali film industry.
