Chandan Dodo RoyKolkata, Jan 11, 2013 (Washington Bangla Radio) Imagine a busy marketplace of the 1950s. What would a passerby have done on finding a bag lying at a corner? Probably peek inside it. Then he would look for the owner or grab it for himself, depending upon his morality. But what would happen in the present day?

In an age when global terrorism has become one of the greatest perils to humanity, an unattended bag or anything else can be the harbinger of death. A series of explosions across the world, mostly in Asia and Middle-East, has killed scores of people over the decades. And in most cases the lethal bomb was in a disguise of an innocent bag.

Such bombs in disguise have even taken many lives in India. Who can forget those serial blasts that killed many in Bangalore, New Delhi, Guwahati, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Mumbai, and even the most peaceful of cities - Pune and Mysore.

So a new kind of phobia has emerged. This phobia, of course, is of unattended things, especially in  public places. Journalist and filmmaker Chandan Dodo Ray’s latest short film ‘Out of Bag’ is a lighter take on this serious matter. The film was received well at Kolkata film festival 2012.

Three periods in time have been portrayed within a running time of 8 minutes. The film ends with an unexpected anti-climax which contains the message of the film.

The film features an all-amateur star cast who have performed well in front of the camera: Suranjan Dey, Siddhartha Singha, Pijush Sinha, Kanko Ghosh Dastidar, Rajkumar Rajak and Chandan Dodo Ray himself.

Besides being a co-producer, Chandan Dodo Ray takes the credits of being the director, scriptwriter and music composer of the film. Arijit as the cinematographer and editor has done a commendable job in the limited scope of a short film.. The film is produced by Debabrata Roy Chowdhury.

Chandan Dodo Ray works with a popular vernacular daily. He has also written, directed the music of, and acted in the upcoming full-length Kolkata Bangla movie "Mission Tollywood".

On being asked about choosing to try film-making, Roy said ‘I am a man who prefers not to bind himself in something particular. I rather have an urge for multitasking. I have also been into Drama, painting and many other creative fields. I love to watch movies since my childhood days. It is perhaps the creative urge and love of movies that have brought me to film-making.”

“Film is a large canvas on which I can depict many things. Both as an actor and filmmaker, I would like to explore numerous cultures, genres and languages”, he added.
