Kolkata, Jan 4, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) The latest Tom Cruise flick ‘Jack Reacher’ is a murder mystery (or rather a mass-murder mystery) that reminds us of the actor’s iconic and masterful performances in blockbusters like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Mission Impossible’ franchises. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film is based on the novel ‘One Shot’ by Lee Child.

The film opens with a sniper killing five people on the road. The cops act quickly, and arrest sniper James Barr based on evidence collected at the scene.

But Barr vehemently denies the accusations, and reaches for  ex serviceman Jack Reacher who has built a reputation as an excellent investigator. Barr's beautiful defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike) is also convinced of her client's innocense and sets out to find ways to get him exonerated.

Tom Cruise portraying the protagonist is the primary draw of the film. He carries the film almost alone on his shoulder and his subdued  yet powerful role is a real treat for his fans, in spite of him being far from the six and a half feet tall blue-eyed blond Jack Reacher described by Lee Child in his book.

Rosamund Pike's performance is more than adequate, but is heavily overshadowed by Tom Cruise. Thankfully, the film also steers clear of romantic digressions with the leading man and lady.

Another actor to watch out for is Warner Zedzog as ‘The Zec’, the notorious crime-lord of the city who had bitten off his fingers after they got infected due to frostbite to survive in a prison cell.

The German director can easily make the best of actors blush.

Overall the film with all its action sequences (it’s hard to forget the road chases and the climax shootout and rescue scene) and tight script (thanks to Christopher McQuarrie for the riveting  screenplay) is good popcorn entertainment and worth your money and time at a theater near you.
