Calcutta, Jan 6, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) What connects Priya Cinema (at Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata) and most Friday evenings? Yes, you guessed it right! The premiere shows of several big-budget and widely anticipated Bengali films are held here on Fridays, with many noted celebrities from the world of cinema adding their starry presence to these occasions. This Friday (the 6th of January) saw the premiere of director Mainak Bhaumik’s well-publicized and eagerly awaited ‘Bedroom’ being held at this theatre.

The show was scheduled to start at 6:30 pm and the guests started to come in more than an hour before the designated time for the screening of the movie. The director, Mainak Bhaumik, was among the first to arrive at the theatre and was instantly circled by eager journalists, posing questions to the young man, or simply requesting the promising filmmaker to pose for a photo. While interacting with the media, Bhaumik revealed that he was experiencing a feeling of excitement and accomplishment, tinged with a hint of nervousness (after all, it’s the premiere night of a big movie!). The frankness and candour of this upcoming and immensely talented director came as a pleasant surprise to all those present at the theatre.
The temperature at Priya Cinema started to soar as the pretty ladies of ‘Bedroom’ started to make their appearance. The gorgeous Parno Mittro arrived first, looking beautiful in a black, off-shoulder outfit.
One of the most camera-friendly stars in contemporary Bengali cinema, the lady was only too glad to pose for the countless photographers jostling amongst themselves to get a good snap of her. Next on the scene was the pretty Ushashie Chakraborty, in a fetching red dress, sending the media men into a fresh tizzy. Paoli Dam, in a classy black designer gown, managed to turn quite a few heads too.
Not to be left far behind, the male leads of ‘Bedroom’ arrived soon after their female counterparts. The biggest cheers were reserved for Abir ‘Byomkesh’ Chatterjee, while the arrival of Rahul caused quite a flutter among the journalists as well.
Rupam Islam, the music director of the movie (along with Allan Ao), was one of the biggest draws of the evening. The immensely popular musician-cum-singer was patient enough to agree for short interview sessions with the media personnel. Producer Rana Sarkar arrived on time too.
Popular actress Swastika Mukherjee was one of the several premier celebrity guests who attended the premiere show of ‘Bedroom’. Incidentally, the opening night of the movie coincided with the birthday of actor Rudranil Ghosh, who plays a significant role in the movie.
As the hands of the clock moved beyond 6:30, all guests (and journalists in tow!) made their way to the movie hall, where the film would be screened. After a brief formal introduction of the entire cast and crew of ‘Bedroom’ to the media, the mike was handed over to Mainak Bhaumik, the director of the movie. The shy and reticent young filmmaker asked the entire team of ‘Bedroom’ to come onstage and promptly handed over the mike to Ushashie, before receding to the background once again (!). The baby-faced director was not at his fluent best in front of the camera, but then, he lets his work behind it do the talking for him. His debut film, ‘Aamra’ was a beautifully crafted movie and we hope to see more of such cinematic gems from Bhaumik over the coming years.
If the opening night of a movie falls on the birthday of any of its major stars, can the press meet be over without a little bit of birthday celebrations? Certainly not! A cake had been brought to celebrate the birthday of Rudranil Ghosh and, in the absence of the latter, Rahul did the honours of cutting the cake (along with Paoli, Parno, Ushashie and the others). He even mildly rebuked Paoli, who was initially reluctant to have a slice of cake (“eituku kheley mota hoye jabi na!”), resulting in the other members of the cast double up in laughter. Abir was questioned (probably for the umpteenth time!) about his next ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’ flick. The actor, to his credit, refused to comment and maintained a sweetly diplomatic smile through the entire length of the function.
The festivities were all done and dusted by 7:00 pm and the movie screening followed immediately. Yes, the proceedings were running late by half an hour or so, but hey, who bothers about such minor delays when one has a chance to catch a glimpse of his/her favourite movie star? The hall was packed to the rafters, ensuring that the opening night of ‘Bedroom’ was a grand success.
We wish the entire team of ‘Bedroom’ all the very best. May it earn rave reviews from movie critics and set the cash registers jingling at the box-office as well.
