Kolkata, January 2, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) Bidding adieu to the year that was, Kolkata was at the height of festivities while a part of the city’s film fraternity took this opportunity to felicitate some of the stalwarts of the industry through a grand award ceremony.
Held on December, 31, 2011 at Sonar Kella, MG Road, Kolkata at 8 pm, this event was a commendable effort to honor Tollywood actresses Supriya Devi, Santwana Bose, Rita Koyral and Sandhya Roy who have contributed immensely to the Bengali film industry.
An endeavor of the Radharani Telefilms Centre, this award ceremony is organized on an annual basis to felicitate the renowned artistes from the film industry as a gesture to send a message across to the young generation. Founded in the memory of the late Radharani Mitra in September 2010, Radharani Telefilms Centre has, since then, become one of the leading launch pads for new talents. Teeming with ideas and bubbling with enthusiasm, this production house has to its credit many successful telefilms and teleserials such as “Moyna”, Mallika” and “Megh Brishtir Khela” to name a few. And, adding yet another feather to its cap, two of its telefilms, “Bhool” and “C/o, Ananda Niketan” have been featured in the 17th Kolkata Short Film Festival this year.
For this year’s award ceremony, Radharani Telefilms Centre has chosen to honor four acting geniuses who have set a standard in the Bengali film industry by the sheer dint of their ability to breathe life into their characters. The name of Supriya Devi needs no introduction. A phenomenon in the 1950s, she has ruled the silver screen for more than 50 years and has played a perfect on-screen as well as off-screen partner to the iconic Uttam Kumar.
Sandhya Roy, on the other hand, is the critically acclaimed actress who has worked with ace directors like Satyajit Ray and Tarun Majumdar and has given some unforgettable cinematic experiences to Bengali movie lovers in the form of films like “Ganadevata”, “Dadar Kirti”, “Bhranti Bilas” and “Ashani Sanket”.
Among other awardees were Santwana Bose, who has been acting in important character roles in films, telefilms and serials since 1980s and Rita Koyral, a very popular actress of film and television.
The actors were felicitated by Mrs. Rina Mitra, the owner of Radharani Telefilms Centre who wished the Bengali film industry a prosperous year ahead. And why not?...taking a cue from these veterans, it made for just the right kind of a start to a successful year. Tollywood, do you hear?
