Rann (2010) - India's Turn at the Battle of Journalism vs Ratings Crazy Media

Rann (2010) Poster

The Big B, Ritesh Deshmukh, Sudeep, Paresh Rawal, Mohnish Behl, Rajat Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Gul Panag, Suchitra Krishnamurthy and others star in Ram Gopal Verma's upcoming Hindi movie RANN (2010).

A fast globalizing India is apparently going through the same questions that our beloved United States has gone through many decades ago - the role and trustworthiness of a out-of-control greedy media in search of ratings, going ballistic with scant regard to journalism. The Hindi blockbuster "PAA" has recently also alluded to this problem that every advancing nation has to get over. As the Indian audience matures, in a few decades, perhaps prime-time TV will have the same respect and seriousness as in the United States now - a vast majority of the population will learn the hard way what is news and what is not. What India is missing still is some kind of a National Public Radio, distinct from the government controlled All India Radio which is struggling to find relevance.

Truth is terrible. When the voice of conscience cannot be heard, when democracy is remote controlled ... RUNN (the word means "Battle").

Amitabh seems to be playing the kind of role he became a legend for - that of a angry man (used to be angry young man, but Big B is not exactly young any more, at least by his age - that has nothing to do with the youth of his mind and acting prowness - given he actually danced in the flopped Aladin.)

RANN was scheduled for a January 22, 2010 release, in time for the Indian independence day. According to reports, it has been pushed back, to avoid conflicting with the first mega-movie of 2010 - SRK-Kajol's My Name Is Khan. RANN has also generated legal and media controversy by hijacking the Indian national anthem - which is ridiculous - the movie-going public is the final judge, and the film will be resounding flop if it insults the patriotism of the Indian movie lover - so why bother with government control and archaic laws ?
