Kolkata, Dec 8 (Washington Bangla Radio) - Sandip Ray spoke exclusively with Washington Bangla Radio at a recent event in Kolkata where the first look of his new Bengali movie MONCHORA was revealed.

Tollywood hunk Abir Chatterjee will play a thief in Sandip Ray’s new Bangla movie ‘Monchora’ based on the story of same name by renowned Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The film also stars Raima Sen, Saswata Chatterjee, June Maliah and Paran Bandyopadhyay in pivotal roles.

Talking to WBRi, Ray hinted at Abir Chatterjee playing a thief of multiple shades in his charater.

"Those who have read the story know about this character. Abir has a multi-layered character in Monchora who goes through a number of transitions as the story progresses.", said Ray.

"The character is tough to describe in words.  But Abir has portrayed it brilliantly and the audience will surely love Abir in this role. The role is the first of its kind role for Abir,” added Sandip Roy.

About the choice of cast, the director said, “I think I ended up with a perfect cast. I wanted to work with people who I have worked with before because chemistry gets stronger and better results are achieved with a familiar team. I have therefor cast Abir again in this role, having worked with him in films like Badshahi Angti, Jekhane Bhooter Bhoy and Chaar. Likewise for Saswata Chatterjee and Paran Bandhopadhaya who are great actors, and this script demanded powerful acting talent. A talented cast also increases the comfort level and adds to confidence of the director which makes my job easier.”

WBRi asked Sandip Ray how much Monchora the film deviates from the original story-line. “I have not changed the story-line significantly as Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s stories have multiple links in their narratives. Attempting major deviations from his original story-line can be disastrous.", said Ray.

"I have only made some little changes for the sake of cinematic adaptation", added Ray.

Ray also hinted at his next Feluda movie that may feature two crime-mysteries together. “I am planning on presenting two Feluda Stories in one movie as 2016 will mark the golden jubilee of Feluda in print. If everything goes well we will have that film released towards the end of 2016."

Asked about bringing another immortal Satyajit Ray character Professor Shonku to the silver screen, Sandip Ray said “Professor Shanku needs grand treatment. So a bit more time is needed to bring Shonku alive on the big screen.”
