"Say No to Violence against Woman: Be a Real Man" Concert in Bangladesh feat. 12 Top Bangla Bands: Press Meet in Khulna

Khulna, Bangladesh, Dec 6, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) UNFPA-BAMBA youth concert with the theme `Say No to Violence against Woman: Be a Real Man’ to be held on 7 December 2012, Friday, from 2-30pm onwards at Khulna District Stadium where Al-Hajj Talukdar Abdul Khalek, City Mayor, Khulna, will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest and Mezbah Uddin, DC, Khulna, Shafiqur Rahman, Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner and Ajmal Ahmed Tapan, Panel Mayor-One, Khulna City Corporation as the Special Guests.

A press conference called on by UNFPA-BAMBA held today (6 December 2012, Thursday) at Khulna Press Club, VIP Lounge at 3:00pm. Mr. Arthur Erken, UNFPA Bangladesh Representative, Foad Nasser Babu, Vice President, BAMBA along with Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu, General Secretary, BAMBA, Afsana Taher, Chief of Operations, UNFPA, Maksoodul Haque (Maqsood O dHAKA), Mizan (band member of Warfaze), Shumi (Lalon), briefed the media regarding the campaign and its objectives. Asma Akter, National Program Officer (Communications), UNFPA, Md. Maruf Hasan, Program Officer (Gender), UNFPA, Doza Alan, CEO, Sky Tracker Limited, were also present on the occasion to express their solidarity with the cause.

Welcoming the media personnel, Afsana Taher, said that, UNFPA is organizing this 16 day long campaign in Bangladesh in collaboration with BAMBA each year since 2010 sending a message that 25 Nov is the International Day to mark End Violence Against Women and 10 Dec is the International Human Rights Day. This concert is an effective tool to convey the message to the younger generation that we have to END Violence against Women in any form, because it is also a violation of the Human Rights of Women.

Mr. Arthur Erken, UNFPA Bangladesh Representative expressed his condolence for the recent tragic incident in Tajreen Garments citing that most of the victims gutted by fire were women workers. He also referred to the incident of Fatima despite being a brilliant student was brutally murdered by her husband for giving birth to a girl. He expressed his contentment teaming up with BAMBA for the third time for such a great cause because “Every woman has the right to live in dignity—free of fear, coercion, violence and discrimination.” He emphasized on this core issue and reiterated that we, the men, are the one who are doing this inhumane atrocity towards women, so it is our duty so refrain from doing so and make others and the members of the next generation realize that a real man simply does not do violence against woman at home and workplace and we can do better than this and can completely eliminate this atrocious practice if we earnestly want it to. A real man does not beat up his wife, or throw acid on the face, or physically or psychologically abuse any women. He said that we have to be very vocal about these malicious issues and incidents.

Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu thanked UNFPA for making BAMBA a partner of this humanitarian campaign to eradicate this current malice of VAW in Bangladesh.  Foad Nasser Babu, through the conference, asked people from all walks of life, specially, the youth of the city to join the protest concert on 7, Friday to unanimously say `No’ to all forms of violence against women and put a full-stop to eve-teasing NOW. He also said that ‘we would like to convey this message through music, against this menace among the music lovers, the young generation to help build the awareness and spread it throughout the country.’ Maksood in his remarks said, BAMBA would always participate in this kind of human rights related campaign focusing a cause like EVAW with any organization along with UNFPA. Shumi said, music is a very powerful and effective tool. And it can contribute effectively to resolve social issues like human rights violation and this call for ending violence against women or focus any messages.

At the press meet they have informed the reporters and media crews during the session that, date of the event is 7 December 2012, Friday, the Venue is Khulna District Stadium and the price for per ticket is BDT 100.00, featuring leading bands like Nagar Baul, Warfaze, Maqsood O’ Dhaka, Feedback, Prometheus, Dalchchut, Lalon, Shironamhin, Nemesis, Mechanix, Beduin and Dreek.
