Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes Returns to Washington DC with Haydn, Bartók, Debussy and Chopin

Washington, D.C., Dec 13, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Internationally-acclaimed Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes returns to the Washington area to perform a program of works by Haydn, Bartók, Debussy and Chopin at The Music Center at Strathmore on February 12.
Andsnes’ recent recording of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos Nos. 3 & 4 received a Grammy nomination for “Best Classical Instrumental Solo,” his eighth Grammy nomination to date. He has already won three Grammy awards.
Andsnes has been described as “an eminently sensual musician, an artist capable of grace and introspection” by the Financial Times, whilst BBC Music Magazine commented on the difficulty of over-praising “the vitality and distinction of this princely pianist.” His most recent CD with siblings Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, featuring Schumann’s complete music for piano trio, was released in May 2011 and included on the New York Times Holiday Gift Guide of 25 recommended CDs.
Andsnes also toured with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Mariss Jansons, performing in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Luxembourg and Paris, and performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and with the Orchestre de Paris under Paavo Järvi in Paris, Chicago and at Carnegie Hall, followed by performances in Rome, St. Petersburg, Berlin, Vienna and other European cities.
In March 2011 Andsnes signed with Sony Classical to record the full cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, to be recorded live in concert in Prague with Andsnes directing from the piano. The project ends during the 2014-15 season with residencies in North America, Europe and Asia, during which the complete cycle will be performed.
Born in 1970 in Karmøy, southern Norway, Andsnes lives in Copenhagen, Bergen, and in Norway’s western Hardanger area. He studied at the Bergen Music Conservatory with Jiří Hlinka and also worked more recently with Jacques de Tiège, Dinu Lipatti, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Sviatoslav Richter, and Géza Anda. He is a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, a Visiting Professor at the Royal Music Conservatory of Copenhagen and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Andsnes has recorded over 30 discs spanning repertoire from Bach to the present day.
Andsnes has received the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist Award, the Gilmore Artist Award and four Gramophone Awards. In 2007 he received Norway's Peer Gynt Prize.
The Piano Masters Series is made possible through the generous support of Betsy and Robert Feinberg.
