Boxer Roman Simakov injured in ring; dies

Moscow, Dec 9 (IBNS): Roman Simakov, Russian light-heavyweight boxer, passed away on Thursday in a Yekaterinburg hospital due to brain injuries.

The boxer fell unconscious in the ring after the seventh knockout round while fighting against US based contender Sergei Kovalev for WBC Asian title on Monday following which he had to be carried on a stretcher to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries after a surgery.

Igor Maruzov, the general secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation, said that no one has been held accountable for his death as of now but an enquiry into the whole case has already begun.

Apparently, Kovalev gave a heavy beating to Roman during the first four rounds and even after being knocked down in the sixth round, the 27 year-old boxer bravely continued to battle it out but it seems that the ‘torrent’ punches of the former in the seventh round took its death toll on the latter.

Reportedly, a post-mortem examination would take place to know the exact cause of his death.

Roman who began his career in 2008, has a record of total nineteen wins, which includes 9 by the way of knockout, 2 losses and one tie.
