A star of Bengali Theater and Film is no more

Calcutta, Dec 27, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) Renowned actor and numero uno director of contemporary Bengali theater, Ramaprasad Banik, passed away at AMRI, South Kolkata at the age of 56. He leaves behind his mother, wife and two daughters.

He joined Bohurupee at the age of just 6 years and he learned the different aspects of drama from Natyaguru Late Sambhu Mitra. He was a favourite pupil of Mitra. He was just 8 when he first performed on stage.

Banik has left behind not only his own family but also hundreds of disciples including famous actors Kharaj Mukherjee, Santilal Mukherjee and many others. He used to train his disciples from the early age of 10. He was directing many successful dramas including “Iti Mritojon” based on the 2nd World War - a production of his own group Theater Passion.

Banik was admitted to the hospital on 25th December, 2010 after feeling ill on reaching home from his last stage show at Chinsura on 24th December evening. As per sources with the Hospital, some unidentified bacteria affected his blood and gradually affected all the cells of his body. He was kept on ventilation from 25th December itself but all the efforts of the doctors failed on the night of 27th December, 2010.
