Prosenjit Chatterjee: I knew no luxury for five months!

December 5, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio / Pen Men at Work): Bengali film actor Prosenjit Chatterjee had worked hard for his Lalon Fakir act in ‘Moner Manush’. If reports are anything to go by, his hard work has paid off and how! Reminiscing on his days of filming for the Goutam Ghose project, Prosenjit Chatterjee remembers that he had indeed gotten under the skin of Lalon Fakir to portray the role for the big screen. So what exactly did the actor do to feel what Lalon Fakir must have felt? Prosenjit Chatterjee says that he spent a life totally devoid of luxury for the five months of shoot.

According to an interview of Prosenjit Chatterjee post the release of his much awaited ‘Moner Manush’, the actor did not move out of the home designed for the film. Not only that, Prosenjit Chatterjee or Bumba, as he is lovingly known as in Bengal, slept and ate on the floors while he was shooting for the film in the jungles of North Bengal. That was a very big sacrifice on the part of an actor who is not familiar with a life without luxury. But Prosenjit Chatterjee reasons that ‘Moner Manush’ was very different from the films that he had been a part of during the early phase of his career and he was ready to undergo any kind of sacrifice to play such a challenging character as Lalon Fakir’s.

The Goutam Ghose movie which has been adapted from the Sunil Gangopadhyay book of the same name is an India – Bangladesh production. ‘Moner Manush’ deals with the subject of love in a world where there is so much hate. After working hard on the project, Prosenjit Chatterjee was suitably rewarded when ‘Moner Manush’ bagged the Golden Peacock Award at IFFI 2010. The golden trophy in his hands was a fitting reward for the wonderfully rendered role of the 19th century poet Lalon Fakir.
