The Grand Hotel (Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA)

Known to the rest of the World as America’s summer place, the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island , Michigan was truly grand. The grand, white structure is majestic  and only justifies its position as a historical landmark. Celebrities and political leaders frequent this place and we wanted to be like them as we spent one day in this truly grand ‘Grand Hotel’ in the great lakes region of North America.

The Hotel Lobby

The Porch

View of Lake Huron

The Hotel has the longest porch in the world and even offers a sweeping view of lake huron from this porch. In fact, there is also a unique view of the lake from the hotels main dining room.
Mackinac Island is accessible by a ferry from the city…its about a fifteen minutes sail on lake Huron. The island is a car free zone and the only transport that can ply on the roads of the island are horse drawn carriages and cycles.
The Grand Hotel has its own horse carriage that the residents or the guests can use to go around the island.
The hotel offers multiple packages for its guests ranging from golf to spa and Michigan sightseeing to spring and fall. Activities offered in the hotel can actually keep the guests busy day long. There is a unique heated outdoor pool where the guests can get a sun tan and even swim in the blue waters that come from the lake. Astor’s spa offers all kinds of beauty and rejuvenating therapies.
Choice of accommodation in the hotel is just out of the World; there are three kind of accommodations available, guest rooms, named rooms and Masco cottages. All rooms come with a full American breakfast. The guest rooms have a lake view option and the named rooms are named after famous personalities. The Masco Cottages have four bedrooms and will treat the guest like a King/Queen. Rates keep varying according to season and it is advisable to call the hotel to get a good deal.

Guest Room

Food is something that is an important part of all travel and Grand Hotel excels here too. There are about ten options to choose depending on what you are feeling like. Some are within the hotel and some are either a short walk or a short horse carriage ride away from the hotel, but all the options are just mind blowing.

The Main Dining Room

The menu in the main dining room was quite elaborate; along with usual garden fresh salads and savory cheeses what we found was the dominance of fish and sea food. It was quite natural because those were got fresh everyday whereas the meaty stuffs had to be brought in from the city via the ferry. We are all fish lovers, so we merrily tasted baked, grilled, fried and steamed variety of all possible types…bliss!!
