[Antony Firingee Tollywood Bengali Movie Poster]Washington DC, Jan 13, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Directed by Sunil Bannerjee, the evergreen Bengali black-and-white oldie Anthony Firingi opened in theaters in Kolkata in 1967 and quickly became a box-office blockbuster film.

Antony Firangi starred Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Tanuja as the hero and heroine supported by Ruma Guha Thakurta, Asitbaran, Bhanu Bannerjee, Jahar Ray, Lolita Chatterjee, Chhaya Devi, Tarun Kumar, Haridhan Mukherjee and other great Tollywood actors and actresses of the time. The film featured Manna Dey and Anil Bagchi as the music composer and director.

Uttam Kumar, who played the title role of  Hensman Anthony - a Portuguese poet and writer who settled down near Chandernagore in West Bengal and adopted Bengali language and culture. Popularly known as Anthony Firangee due to his foreign origin, Antony composed Bengali devotional songs mainly dedicated to Goddess Kali (Shyamasangeet) and Durga, including some popular Agamani songs that welcome Maa Durga before the Durga Pujas. Antony's contribution to the building of a Kali temple in North Calcutta is immortalized by the name of the temple - Firangi Kalibari in Bowbazar.

Uttam Kumar's performance as Antony Firangee won him a Indian National Film Award in 1968. Tanuja plays Shakila - a beautiful woman and romantic interest of Antony Firangee - in a beautiful tale of romance and tragedy.
