Tollywood Kolkata Bengali Movie Director Atanu GhoshGermantown, Maryland, Jan 8, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) After the spectacularly successful Angshumaner Chobi (Buy Bengali Movie DVD in USA) which, after a fabulous run in theaters, is holding it's position as the top-selling Bengali DVD for over 180 days now, the next film from director Atanu Ghosh titled Takhan Teish has a release date of January 21, 2011.

Atanu granted Arijit Chakraborty of WBRi some time from his busy schedule to talk about Takhan Teyish. Atanu is, obviously, pretty happy with the response to Angshumaner Chobi - he particularly appreciates the recent trend of Benaglees actually purchasing original DVDs and staying away from pirated copies - piracy being the single biggest threat to Bengali cinema at this time. Of course, Angshumaner Chobi famously landed two awards at the hugely competitive Asia-Pacific Film Festival in Taiwan - Soumitra Chatterjee received the best supporting actor award and Sujoy Dutta Roy received the prize for best Editor. No easy achievement where films from a great number of countries were competing !

You will perhaps remember we previously had an opportunity to talk to Atanu Ghosh in an extensive, comprehensive and intimate interview about the then recently released Angshumaner Chobi. That candid audio interview is available online in this post.

Talking about Takhan 23, Atanu describes from his unique directorial perspective that the film is about virtual relationships over modern means of communication and socializing and their ramification on the the human psyche. The film explores the impact of social networking over services like Facebook, Orkut (a little-known social networking service owned by google, very popular in India and Brazil), Twitter and so on. Not only that, the film explores other sensitive issues about the minds of people - their attitudes towards fantasies, emotions, romantisicm - and how they are influenced by the online influence of technological advancement of the internet. The anonymity of online communication often leads people to divulge their deepest personal secrets and thoughts ! At the end of the day, is the current generation better with less ambivalence and more directeness that is encouraged by social networking ?

The character Tamodeep (played by Jishu Sengupta) in the film is the primary vehicle for such explorations by Atanu. Tamodeep is 23 years old, and born into a family of extremely successful people. When Tamodeep was slightly over a year old, his accomplished grandfather had made a curious prophecy - that Tamodeep would grow up to either become an artist, or run away from home !

Tamodeep grows up perfectly aware of his grandpa's vision - which actually has considerable effect on his formative years and young adulthood. When Tamodeep is 23, a bunch of things happen around him, mainly around four women in his life - his mother, his Biology Teacher Meghna, a facebook friend Sriparna and his romantic fantasy. In a span of 48 hours, Tamadeep goes through faily titanic changes in his concepts of relationships and faith. Listen to the beautiful way Atanu describes the background of the storyline.

Film lovers will see Jishu Sengupta in a completely different role in Takhan Teish. Tanushree Sankar plays Tamadeep's mother and Biswajeet Chakraborty plays his dad. Actress Indrani Halder plays Meghna the biology teacher. Facebook friend Sriparna is played by Aparajita Ghosh Das. Rajatava plays a crucial role in the film - his role is that of a middle-aged person who is very active in online chat rooms and socializing as well.

A related theme of the film is about mobile phones and the SMS style of communication - Atanu also explores ramifications of text messaging on the modern world. Surprisingly, Ranadeep's father turns out to be pretty modern in the film, keeping up with his son in latest SMS techniques!

Do not miss Atanu's interesting and humorous anecdotes from shooting of the film !

Atanu also dwells on his next film, titled ABBY SEN-ER AJOB DUNIYA - a comedy-drama involving time-travel, perhaps for the first time in Bengali cinema to have a sci-fi like theme of the nature. The film is in a very early stage, and at this point it looks like the star cast will have Parambrata Chattopadhyay (interview), Aparajita Ghosh Das and Chiranjeet Chakraborty - the superstar who we will love to watch after a gap of many years. Chiranjeet will play the role of a scientist in the film. Though a comedy, the film has an underlying message as well. Atanu says that in some ways, Abby Sen is the opposite of Takhan Teish, in the sense of the quest of a brilliant person to become ordinary !
