KIFF: Kolkata International Film Festival Goes Competitive with Highest Prize Money Yet for Royal Bengal Trophy

Kolkata, November 13, 2015 (Washington Bangla Radio): Kolkata International Film Festival, the second oldest film festival  of India, turns 21 this year. Legendary actors Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Moushumi Chatterjee and sensational Bollywood actors including Hrithik Roshan and Vidya Balan are heading towards Kolkata to inaugurate the 8-day long festival.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Ms. Mamata Bandyopadhyay will personally preside over the opening ceremony on Saturday the 14th of November. Shah Rukh Khan, the Brand ambassador of West Bengal, will not be present this year due to his prior film commitments.

At a recently held press conference in Kolkata it was announced that like last year this year too there will be  a competitive section for ‘International Films by Women Directors’.  It has also been  announced that the prize money allotted for the winner is a whopping Rupees 51 Lakhs that will go along with a "Royal Bengal Trophy".

This amount makes KIFF the International film festival with highest prize money on offer in India.

The 21st edition of the festival will feature as many as 149 movies by 137 directors from 61 countries at 12 venues across the city over 8 days. There are 23 Indian films among the 149 to be screened.

Kolkata film Festival this year will pay tribute to the legendary Portugese filmmaker Manoel De Olivera by exhibiting his six films. An equal number of films by French great Jean Renoir will be shown  as his works are being celebrated in the Great Master section this year.

A separate section has been dedicated to sports movies in the festival. There will also be  a section which has been added to celebrate the 25 years of Netpac (Network for the promotion of Asian Cinema).

A special tribute will be paid to Bappaditya Bandyopadhyay who passed away recently.
