Bollywood Actress Sonali Bendre graces the Sweden India Memorial Week 2013 in Kolkata

Kolkata, November 5 (Washington Bangla Radio): The Swedish Embassy of India hosted the Sweden India Memorial Week 2013 in Kolkata. This event is a yearly event which is held every year to recognize the Swedish innovations that take place in various parts of the world. Apart from this, the event also marked the hundredth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nobel Prize win and his extensive contribution towards empowering women. The occasion with the presence of actress Sonali Bendre, the Ambassador of Sweden, HE Mr. Harald Sandberg, Madhumanti Maitra, Niklas Frisk, Chanda Gayen, P. N. Jha and A. J. Philip.

The event kick started with a wonderful performance by Anupam Ray. The singer mesmerized the audience with his song Second Sex. The song revolved around the atrocities committed against the women all over the country. Anupam who had never sung a Rabindrasangeet in front of a live audience went out of his comfort zone and sang two songs of Tagore. “Bone Jodi phutlo kusum” and “Tomra ja bolo tai bolo” are the two songs which the singer sang. Apart from this he also sang few of his hit songs like “Beche thakar gaan”, “Aamake ama moton thakte dao”.

Tagore was a firm supporter of the upliftment and education of women and constantly worked towards this cause. A zealous champion of women’s rights, his sentiment toward women resounded in his poems and novels and manifested into great works of art. Saluting this spirit, the host of the event Madhumanti Maitra recited some lines of a poem of Tagore named Woman for the assembled media and the guests.

The moment Sonali Bendre made her entry into the room all heads turned towards her. The lady looked bright and gorgeous in her orange colored Anarkali. Sonali Bendre who is the brand ambassador of Oriflame in India is a strong believer in the empowerment of women. “The empowering of women especially in our country is of prime importance. This is more so because of the fact that they should be made to understand their inherent strength and importance. Only then will they be able to prosper in their lives. Economic independence is important and Oriflame has been providing a platform for the women to achieve that for the past couple of years” said the actress.

Chanda Gayen, the first civilian to climb the Mt. Everest narrated her experience in front of the assembled guests. Monetary problem was the main hurdle which she faced. She had to collect twenty two lakh rupees for the expedition. He mother sold off her jewels and with a little help from the government she made the expedition. She highlighted on the fact that economic independence is vey important for the empowering of the women in our country.

Niklas Frisk of Oriflame India highlighted on the way the company was doing their level best to help in the empowering of women. A woman can enroll for a sum of two hundred and ninety rupees with the company. She will be given the required training and then she will be able to earn money. This will give the women the economic freedom which is so very important for the women in India.
