Kolkata, Nov 24, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) The spirit of Kolkata in the 1970’s and Park Street of that time come alive in “Dutta vs Dutta”, the latest Bengali feature film by National Award winning director Anjan Dutta. With this film, he has tried to create a biopic of the era and he has succeeded in the portrayal. Therein also lies the charm of this film.

Out of the number of films that Anjan Dutta has made in his career, Dutta Vs Dutta has the strongest emotional quotient. This may be due to the fact that the director borrowed inspiration for the story of the film from his own family. How much the facts of the story are derived from the actual happenings in his family is a debatable question. But there is a striking resemblance between the hero of the story Ron and Anjan Dutta in reality. Every character of the film has been drawn with great care, breathing life into them.

The film has been depicted from the perspective of Ron (Ranadip Bose). His family consists of his alcoholic mother (Rita Koiral), his sister Chini (Arpita Chatterjee), Khokada (Kaushik Sen) the Naxalite leader who later becomes his brother-in-law, Ghenti kaku (Shankar Chakraborty) who maintains an illicit physical relationship with his sister and mother, a mentally challenged uncle (Subhasish Mukherjee), a quarrelsome uncle (Biswajit Chakraborty), a distant aunt and his father’s extra marital lover Runu (Rupa Ganguly). Parno Mitra plays a small role as Diana in the film. Ron introduces the characters as voice-overs or by depicting certain incidents about the characters.

The majority of the characters of this Dutta family have been brought to the forefront due to the ideological conflict between the father Biren Dutta (Anjan Dutta) and the son Ron. The conflicts between the father and the son form the basis of the film and hence the name "Dutta vs Dutta". Both characters have been developed with intense care and the detailing done to the characters is excellent.

For giving a turn to the plot, the character of Tony Mukherjee (played by acclaimed writer-director Srijit Mukherjee) and the character of Ron’s grandfather  (Dipankar De) have been added. Srijit Mukherjee sings a song “Bhalo Jodi Baso” and plays his guitar and it is this song that gives Ron the strength to be courageous and confront his father. It is from his grandfather that Ron gets the idea of following his heart and doing what he likes best. These two plot points are the main turning points in the story of ‘Dutta vs Dutta’.

The screenplay and music direction have been done by Anjan Dutta himself. He has also acted in the film, in the role of his own father.

This film has a good number of reasons for film lovers to go and watch it. This is one of the better realistic films made by Anjan Dutta. The performances of the actors are spectacular. Special mentions in the acting department can be made of Ranadip and Anjan Dutta who have soared above the others' already high flights.

As a music director Neel Dutta is more than adequate. “Bhalobese sokhi nibhrite jotone” has been arranged wonderfully by him which is sure to bring him a lot of appreciation.

Dutta vs Dutta is a conflict that one must not miss at any cost!
