India, Ukraine ink visa exemption accord

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IBNS): India and Ukraine on Friday signed an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic passport holders as foreign ministers of the two nations a number of issues, including trade and terrorism.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, accompanied by his spouse, senior officials and members of the Ukrainian business community, arrived in India on Thursday four-day visit.

Gryshchenko on Friday held delegation-level talks with the his Indian counterpart S M Krishna as the two sides held wide ranging discussions on bilateral relations as well as on regional and international issues of mutual interest. 

While expressing satisfaction at the state of the multi-faceted relationship, both sides recognized considerable untapped potential, and agreed to work together to realize it, a statement from India’s foregn ministry said.

Bilateral trade between India and Ukraine has been witnessing a steady growth to touch $2.24 billion in 2010-11. 

The two countries agreed to hold the next meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission next year to impart further momentum to the economic and trade ties while also work out a mechanism to speed up the issuance of visas to make it easier for businessmen, tourists, students and others to travel in both directions.

Both sides also agreed to enhance mutually beneficial defence, cultural, educational, investment and other ties.

As the Krishna and Gryshchenko expressed desire to further enhance high level exchanges, the visiting minister extended an invitation to his Indian counterpart to visit Kyiv at an early date. 

The Foreign Ministers also exchanged notes on the situation in their respective regions and on international issues. 

Gryshchenko conveyed Ukraine's support for India's permanent membership of an extended UN Security Council, the statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs said.

“The foreign ministers recognised terrorism as a global menace and pledged common efforts to root out this scourge,” it added.

Minister Gryshchenko also called on Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar. 

He met the Commerce & Industry Minister Anand Sharma, to discuss details of bilateral economic cooperation.
