Discovering the other side of the legend - An exhibition of rare photographs by Satyajit Ray

Calcutta, Nov 16, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) It was like a walk through moments frozen in eternity!

The exhibition of photos shot by the legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray at the 17th Kolkata film Festival captured his tryst with the still camera beautifully. With every photograph sharing a silent conversation from past, every shot was a sight to savor.  This showcase of some of the never-before-seen black and white photos by Ray shot in the late 1950’s to late 1960’s, had cities from round the world as their backdrop.  From New York, Los Angeles, London, Rome, Vienna, Berlin, Japan, Tehran and some parts of East Germany to our very own Rajasthan, Puri and Darjeeling, his camera had captured different moods and moments in the form of portraits and landscapes.

Some of the photographs also feature the iconic Bengali actor, Uttam Kumar and the Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosowa. However, the most striking of all seemed to be the 1960’s photograph shot in Vienna featuring Gary Cooper in a poster for a movie called “Bengali”…interesting! Photos apart, there were also a few of his sketches from his film, “Shatranj ke Khiladi”.

The ongoing exhibition that had started on Nov 11 and will go on till Nov 17, is being held at the Gangendra Pradarshashala in the Nandan film complex.  Sandip Ray, Ray’s son is the brain behind this exhibition shared many a trivia regarding his father’s love for photography. Mostly shot during his extensive hunts for location for his films, the perfectionist as he was, was always equipped with his still camera.

This exhibition sure shows why the man was listed as one of the top 10 photographers by the TIME Magazine. We more than agree !
