Mumbai, Nov 21, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio / PRLog) Kiran Deohans, the celebrated award winning Cinematographer of "Jodhaa Akbar", "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" , "Aks"and "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak"  and the upcoming film "Khelein hum ji jaan se" visited Digital Academy - The Film School to share his experiences with students of  Cinema.

He commenced by talking  about Cinematographers being silent magicians and their role which goes hand in hand with the Director where they maintain a strong bond of respect and trust  .He said that the DOP has to work in sync with the entire unit and achieve the desired results. He shared one of the instances when various dynamics which come into play as  rest of the team may not be able to appreciate the technical limitations faced by the DOPs.  He had to take a tough job of convincing the Director and the Production Team to shoot just for two hours ( instead of the entire day) to have the desired impact.

He emphasised on the role of team work and of the importance of  communication with the team and shared one of his interesting experiences while shooting “Aks” where despite repeated attempts he was unable to frame the two actors Amitabh Bachchan and Manoj Bajpai involved in a confrontation scene in a prison cell , however at a later stage when he shared his difficulties with both the Actors and the Director, a solution emerged from Mr Bachchan, which allowed him to successfully complete the shot.

He also spoke about the role of DOP in film post production, achieving the right look of the film. He highlighted the fact that various Directors have different styles of working for eg Ashutosh Gowarikar doesn’t allow his  Actors to review their shots.

He said that it was important for students to be well versed with their technical skill sets as the new generation Directors come with reasonable understanding of photography for eg Ayan Mukerji from “Wake Up Sid “ began his film making career with a handy cam .

He spoke about the the new release “Khelein hum ji jaan se " where on the sets he saw five of the Digital Academy -The Film School students working with the unit .Post lunch he met the students individually  and appreciated the fact that the Film School has the best of the kind facility and faculty who have won National and International Awards .
