Zee Bangla - A top-rated Bengali TV Channel from Kolkata, India

Zee Bangla TV Channel Kolkata

Indian media visionary Subhash Chandra founded the biggest Indian media and entertainment house: the Mumbai based Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, belonging to the Essel group which is also headed by Chandra.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises was founded in 1992. The history of Zee Bangla TV Channel starts in 1996, right around the time Cable Television entered India. The concept of Community Antenna Television (CATV), which later became to be called Cable TV, originated in the town of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, USA in 1948. People in the mountain town were having problems receiving TV signals with roof-mounted antennas due to the terrain. Displaying classic American ingenuity, John Walson erected an antenna on a mountain top, and using an ingenious combination of custom-made boosters, was able to deliver programming from three Philadelphia TV stations to folks in the town via cables drawn to their houses.

50 years later and half-way across the world, Indians got introduced to Cable TV, partly as a result of the vision of a modern India and subsequent actions taken by the Government of India on the advice of Manmohan Singh, the Indian finance minister in early 1990s and the current Prime Minister of India.

Zee Bangla had a false start in 1996, and went off air within a couple of months due to poor viewership. Calm prevailed till 1999, when the Channel was relaunched as Alpha Bangla, which many of us remember with fondness. Alpha Bangla did well, and was renamed Zee Bangla in 2005 when Zee TV took significant steps in brand consolidation.

Today, Zee Bangla is one of the top Bengali TV Channels which, along with ETV Bangla, rules viewership numbers and TV ratings. Greatly popular shows on Zee TV include Sa Re Ga Ma Pa: Li'l champs, Shashuri Zindabad, Erao Shatru, Asambhav, Rani Kahini, Hero, Ei Ghar Ei Sansar, Agni Pariksha, Khona, Mirakkel, Kofee and more, Rannaghar, Dance Bangla Dance hosted by Bengali and Bollywood Movie Superstar Mithun Chakraborty, Dadagiri Unlimited hosted by Indian ex-cricket captain Saurav Ganguli, Bichitra, Chander Buri O Magicman, Raju Uncle and so on.
