Calcutta, October 11, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) Directed by Tapan Sinha, "UPAHAAR" Tollywood Kolkata Bengali movie starring Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Manju Dey, Jahar Ray, Salil Dutta, Nirmal Kumar, Chhabi Biswas, Nripati Chatterjee, Kanu Bannerjee and others released in August of 1955 in theaters including Minar, Bijoli and Chobighar.

Upahar featured music directed by Kalipada Sen.

This was Tapan Sinha's 2nd feature film, made after his debut "Ankush" (1954) & before "Tonsil" (1956). Right after Tonsil, Sinha's Kabuliwala (1956) landed him a coveted Silver Bear film award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

A romance-drama film of it's time, Upahar is a classic tear-jerker involving a beautiful young girl Krishna who is barred from marrying her lover Sunil by her greedy father who instead forces her to marry a nut who pays dowry. The girl runs away, and eventually meets with an accident. Though she survives, a now-repentant and shocked father collapses. Sunil  returns and Krishna discovers her father's stash, and everyone lives happily ever after.
