Calcutta, Oct 8, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / IBNS) Keeping in mind the festive spirit of love, unity and fraternity Singhi park Durgotsav Committee and the Chinese community of Kolkata came together to present the unique and very traditional "Lion Dance" for the first time here to mark the immersion ceremony of Durga Puja on Oct 7.

The Lion dance is not only a mere ornamentation of the immersion process, but an integral part of the whole event as it is also a symbol of victory of good over evil.

It has a deeper social relevance that the two communities are close enough to celebrate in each others’ festivals.

“The primary reason is to show the solidarity of the Chinese community with the people of Bengal, a state where they have made their home. The Lion dance is a symbol of good chasing away the evil and peace and prosperity returning to the land,” said James Leao, leader of the Lion dance group.

“In Hindu mythology the lion was given to Goddess Durga by Lord Himalaya. Here also the lion descends from heaven and so we find a mythological link too,” Leao said.

Abhijit Majumdar, Secretary, Singhi Park Durgostav Committee, said, “We are overjoyed to have the Chinese fraternity join us in the festival. We have been living together for years now and it shows the right spirit that we are true neighbours who take part in each other’s festivals and help each other in their needs.”
