Rani Rashmoni Durga Puja | WBRi Kolkata Bonedi Barir Pujo Report

Calcutta, September 1, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / IBNS) Rani Rashmoni started performing Durga Puja at her SN Banerjee house in Kolkata in 1790.

Later Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansadev worshipped the Durga idol in her Natmandir in 1864 during Rashmonis son-in-law Mathur Babus regime.

Rashmoni's Durga Puja was an elaborate affair much like the Queen herself.

The five days of Puja were made more memorable with traditional performances like 'yatra' and 'kavigaan' by artists from various parts of West Bengal. With changing times, the grandeur of Rashmoni's Durga Puja has faded.

However, every year Durga, the Goddess of Power, is worshipped at her ˜Natmandir".

The tradition of ˜Kumari Puja is still on. But the practice of animal sacrifice ('boli') has stopped since 2003.
