Five days of revelry commence on Mahashashthi in Kolkata and Bengal

Kolkata, Oct 1, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / IBNS): The bustling streets, long queues and the competiton over the best theme will keep the joyful city called Kolkata busy for the upcoming five days as Bengalis start celebrating their favourite festival called Durga Puja  officially from Sunday on the Mahashasti day even as the festive spirit has gripped the state from Saturday iteself.

Glimpses of Kolkata gearing up for Shashthi

Like every year, the city has redesigned itself like a newly wed bride with colours, pandals, and lighting  People who remain busy with their usual life is equally charged up for the celebration.

On Friday evening, the usual marketing pockets of the city were bustling with huge crowd who were busy shopping the best dress which they consider will make them look the best during this season.

The picture was unaltered in every corner of the city whether it was Gariahat in the South or Hatibagan in the north.

Durga Puja indeed change and alter the demographic and lifestyle to great extent and once it passes away the vaccum is soon removed with the thought that in the next year the days of merry-making will be back again.

The clubs are already busy giving their pandals a last minute touch and ensuring that their puja attracts huge number of gathering this season.

From North to South, the clubs are ready with their unique themes and decorations. People will travel the entire map of the city in haunt of the best pandals and protima (the idol).

It will be complete freedom for the city from their daily schedule. Starting from the small school goers to the office going executive, all will be relieved from their every day tussle with life and get involved in high spirited entertainment.

While the children still depend on their parents to taste the flavours of Durga Puja, the teenagers and college students will prefer to go to Maddox Square or some other famous puja pandals in Kolkata and taste the festivity in their own perspective.

While the entire city will be busy rushing to pandals, there will be some who will love to stay home and have adda (chat) season with old friends and relatives who might drop in their place during these period.

"I hardly go out during the puja. My daughter visits my home during Durga Puja and I prefer to spent the moment with them. We chat and have nice time indoors," Manjuli Dutta, a house wife said.

Another housewife Anupama Sen said she avoids going outdoors now.

"Oh I really don't prefer going out these days. I love chatting with old friends with whom it  is not possible to contact in the other days of the year," says Sen.

"I really love cooking and during these five days I prepare traditional Bengali dishes for my family," Gargi Das, another house wife from Kolkata said.

No matter what you have planned for this year, Kolkata and Bengal at large is ready to celebrate the much awaited festival of Bengalis from Sunday till the immersion on the Vijaya Dasami day on Thursday.
