The myth says that, Raja Surath had started the worshipping of goddess Durga(just before the onset of spring) to rescue his own kingdom from his selfish relatives over and all. But, the mythical cum historical character, the god (one avtar of the 10 avtars of Lord Vishnu) and the human (the king of the Ayodhya) Raja Ram has started the tradition of Akal Bodhan (the worshipping of goddess Durga in the month of Ashwin,before the beginning of autumn)which becomes the biggest festival of the Bengalis all over the world as a matter of fact.

It is known that in the modern (historical actually) time, the one of the agents of Robert Clive, Nabakrishna Deb has started the Durga puja in his family in fact. It was 1757, when the battle of Plassey was occurred. And, the banian (agent) Nabakrishna Deb started his family Durga puja from this year only. Actually he wanted to celebrate the victory of the British - very faithfully.

But, there were some other families in and around the city - Calcutta, who had been worshiping the goddess Durga earlier than 1757. Such as - the family of Sabarno Chaudhuri(Sabarno Chaudhuri was the real owner of the three villages of Sutanuti, Govindapur, Kolikata, which formed the city Calcutta later).

Gradually, Durga puja become the most important status symbol in Bengal society indeed. Durga puja was a part of the famous ‘Babu culture’ of Bengal(it was said that,after reaching in Calcutta, goddess Durga went to house of Shivakrishna Dawn to wear the jewelleries, then she shifted to the house of Abhayacharan Mitra to be feed and then stayed up whole night in the house of Deb’s to view the dance show only). Durga puja had started to announce the arrival of a family in Calcutta (the first British capital in our great country India) high society as a matter of fact.

Those days are gone. But some of these respected families (Pathuriyaghatae Ghosh Barir Durga pujo – Hatkholar Dutta Barir Durga poju- Shovabazar Rajbarir Durga pujo – Gonsai Barir Durga pujo – Laha Barir Durga pujo – Darji Parar Mitra Barir Durga pujo – Patoldangar Basu Mallik Barir Durga puju – Jorasankor Badan Chandra Roy Barir Durga pujo etc.)

are continuing the worshiping of the goddess Durga, despite fall in welth and so many divisions within the families till date. What is remarkable is that, these families are continuing with all most the same tradition of rituals and all of Durga puja even now.
