Germantown, Maryland, October 24, 2010 (Washington Bangla Radio) Writer, director, actor Tanaji Dasgupta is appearing in a Bengali film RANG MILANTI directed by Kaushik Ganguly. Tanaji's debut feature film as an actor was Anjan Dutta's 2009 film MADLY BANGALI (DVD release). In this exclusive, comprehensive and informal audio interview, Arijit Chakrabarty of Washington Bangla Radio caught up with Tanaji soon after he returned from a very busy shooting stint in Bangladesh.
Film-maker Kaushik Ganguly was actually Tanaji's Bengali language teacher for a year when Tanaji was in 9th grade at middle school !
Bengali film-maker Kaushik Ganguly's earlier movies include Jackpot (DVD) starring Hiran Chatterjee, Koel Mullick, Rahul and Sohini Pal; Just Another Love Story and Shunyo E Bukey (DVD) starring Rupa Ganguly, Churni Ganguly, Koushik Sen, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Dipankar Dey.
Tanaji Dasgupta is one of the founders of the much acclaimed Kolkata English theater group TIN CAN along with Soumyak Kanti De Biswas. Tanmay Dhanania is also involved closely with the troupe. Tin Can's first production was INTRO and 2nd one was VIDEO. Tanaji's ancestral roots are in Bangladesh, but Tanaji's parents were living in Jamshedpur (an industrial town famous for TATA Steel in the Indian state of Jharkhand) when Tanaji was born. He moved with his parents to Calcutta when still very young, and grew up in Calcutta.
Tanaji is an actor from early on - when in 5th grade, he played the lead role of MOGLI in a theatrical adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's famous 1894 novel JUNGLE BOOK set in the forests of India. Over his school years, Tanaji participated in many inter-school meets and drama festivals, eventually participating with his friends in the inter-school drama festival organized by the British Council in Calcutta that required participants to write and direct original dramas. It is the latter that eventually led to TIN CAN in 2006.
Tanaji always wanted to make short films. With his extensive experience in all aspects of theater, one thing led to another and in 2004 he met Konkona Sen Sharma while doing a play, and eventually assisted Konkona with her first short film that Konkona was making for a film-festival, in 2005. As things transpired, Tanaji eventually had an opportunity in 2007 of assisting the internationally acclaimed film-maker APARNA SEN (WBRi interview) while Aparna was making The Japanese Wife (DVD) that was released earlier this year (2010).
Do not miss listening to Tanaji's explanation of why TIN CAN was so named ! Clue - it derives from the names of the founders.
Coming to feature films, Tanaji debuted as an actor with Anjan Dutta's acclaimed film MADLY BANGALI (2009) co-starring Anjan Dutta, Tin-Can fellow-founder Soumyak Kanti De Biswas, Anubrata Basu, Sumeet Thakur, Roshni Bose, Anusuya, Supriya Devi, Saswata Chatterjee etc. In his current project RANG MILANTI, Tanaji is working with some of the smartest and brightest youg talented folks in contemporary Kolkata, including Elena Kasnatscheewa (WBRi exclusive audio interview), Gaurav Chakraborty (whose father is the acclaimed Bengali and Hindi film-actor Sabyasachi Chakrabarty - the new Feluda), Indrashish Roy, Gaurav Chatterjee (Mahanayak Uttam Kumar's grandson), actress Riddhima (who plays Kamalika - a character that Tanaji describes as being at the center of it all, because she likes all the four boys!), and even film-maker Riingo Banerjee (WBRi interview) who makes a special appearance.
RANG MILANTI is a romance-comedy, a warm funny story of the girl Kamalika having to choose a life-partner from the four guys, but not knowing how to.
Incidentally, as Tanaji informs us, Indrashish Roy and Gaurav Chatterjee are also acting in the fabulous TV serial GANER OPARE on STAR JALSHA featuring Rituparno Ghosh's script with actors Arjun Chakraborty and Mimi Chakraborty in lead roles and music directed by Debojyoti Mishra (WBRi interview). The producer of GANER OPAREY is Ideas Creations - a production house founded by Kolkata Tollywood movie hero Prosenjit Chatterjee (WBRi interview).
