WBRi Movie Review - Journey 2: The Mysterious Land (2012)

Film Poster - Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)Calcutta, Feb 4, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio / Penning Creations) Action-adventure has always been a favourite genre among Hollywood filmmakers. While movies like ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Lord Of The Rings (trilogy)’ were path-breaking action-adventure flicks from the ‘90s and the early 2000s, directors went on (successfully!) churning out immensely entertaining and high-quality movies of this genre during the latter half of the last decade too (think ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Inception’). The advent of 3D technology enhanced the popularity of this genre of movies further, with directors now being able to add that extra bit of realism and glitz in their films. Not all such action-adventure flicks were uniformly good, however. The Eric Brevig-directed 2008 flick, ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth’ is a prime example of a rather disappointing movie that belongs to this genre. Brad Peyton (of ‘Cats & Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore’ fame) now returns with ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Land’, a sequel to the rather ho-hum earlier movie. While Peyton manages to show off his directorial skills quite effectively in this film, ‘Journey 2’, on the whole, is a relatively drab affair.

The movie opens with young ‘Sean Anderson’ (Josh Hutcherson) trying to escape from the police after a botched up attempt at accessing a remote signal from a satellite research center. ‘Sean’, however, does not manage to avoid the authorities and is duly handed over to his step-father ‘Hank Parsons’ (Dwayne Johnson). However, ‘Sean’s troubles had not entirely gone to waste. He had managed to get hold of a satellite transmission code, which sounds like a mix-and-match of several disjointed and incomprehensible words. In a bid to bond with ‘Sean’, ‘Hank’ (whose relations with his stepson had always been rather strained) solves the code, which seemingly gives the directions to a certain strange island (from ‘Gulliver’s Travels’, ‘Treasure Island’ and Jules Verne’s ‘The Mysterious Island’ novels). ‘Sean’ is convinced that it is his long-lost grandfather, ‘Alexander Anderson’ (Michael Caine), who is sending out the signals, in an attempt to let his family know that the so-called ‘Mysterious Island’ has finally been discovered.

Picture: Srijit MukherjiCalcutta, Jan 27, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) After the thumping box office success of Autograph, his debut film and a Databazaar Media acquisition, actor-filmmaker Srijit Mukherjee has one more feather on his feathered cap – his second film Baishe Srabon is a big hit once again and has again been acquired by Databazaar Media for streaming and telecasting throughout North America and Canada. Nailed for an interview, this is what Srijit has to say about his second film.

What is the significance of the title of your film that coincides with Tagore’s death anniversary and is also the title of a Mrinal Sen film of yore?

The significance of the title is organically linked to the plot. Each murder is committed to coincide with the date of birth, etc of some famous Bengali poet. I would hate to explain the true significance without giving away the plot. I can definitely say, the film has got nothing to do with the legendary Mrinal Sen's Baishey Srabon.

A lot of abusive language filled with invectives and four-letter words have been used in the film. Didn’t you face problems with the Censor Board?

We got an “A” certificate but that is about it. If there is an uniform set of guidelines, the language we have used in Baishe Srabon nothing compared to what we have seen in Hindi films like Omkara, Kaminey, Shaitaan, Delhi Belly etc. Most importantly, the abuses are there in accordance with the script and the character.

What is your own gut reaction to your own film?

WBRi Movie Review: AGNEEPATH (2012) Hindi Film: Hrithik Roshan And Sanjay Dutt Light Up Polished Bollywood Potboiler

Calcutta January 27, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio/ Penning Creations): Remaking cult classics from yesteryears is a risky affair, as most filmmakers would agree. While ‘RGV Ki Aag’ (the ambitious remake of the evergreen ‘Sholay’) had been an unqualified disaster, even Farhan Akhtar’s decision to recreate ‘Don’ had met with considerable initial scrutiny and scepticism. Karan Johar himself had earlier tried to remake the Hollywood hit ‘Stepmom’ with the distinctly average ‘We Are Family’. Johar returns as producer again with ‘Agneepath’ – the remake of the Amitabh Bachhan, Mithun Chakrabarty-starrer of the same name (which released in 1990).  Thanks to the sleek and stylish promos, the star attraction (Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra are, currently, two of the biggest names in B-town) and indeed, the very fact that this was a remake of an earlier classic, the film generated high levels of pre-release hype and anticipation. Thankfully, with debutant director Karan Malhotra at the helm, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions strikes gold with ‘Agneepath’. This revenge saga is as polished as they come in Bollywood!

Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra Hot Scene from New Agneepath (2012) Hindi Movie. The film features Sanjay Dutt in a fearsome Kancha look.

For those who are not aware of the basic premise of the story, ‘Agneepath’ relates the tale of ‘Vijay’ (Hrithik Roshan), who lives with his parents in the quiet village of Mandwa. From his very childhood, ‘Vijay’ has been listening to inspiring, character-building principles about how one should always be prepared to walk through the path of fire and righteousness (hence the title of the movie – ‘Agneepath’). The family is also expecting the arrival of a new member soon, with ‘Vijay’s mother (Zarina Wahab) being pregnant again. Everything seems to be picture-perfect for young ‘Vijay’ and his family.

Hollywood Action Thriller HAYWIRE (2012) Release in India

Haywire (2012) Hollywood English Movie PosterMumbai, Jan 25, 2012 (Washington Bangla Radio) PVR Pictures have announced that they will be the official distributors of ‘Haywire’. The movie will be imported to India by Tanweer Films and is scheduled to be released on 27th January 2012.

Director, Steven Soderbergh, has set out to revolutionize the ‘action thriller’ genre with his intelligent take on ‘Haywire’.

Steven Soderbergh was taken aback by Gina Carano, the women's mixed martial arts champion, when he saw her on TV.

He consequently decided to cast her as a covert operations agent in a thriller modeled on the inconsequential Bond-like entertainments of the 1960s and 70s that he admired, all chases, fights and shoot-outs, with one-word titles such as Charade, Mirage, Kaleidoscope, Hopscotch, Arabesque, Masquerade.

Synopsis

A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.
