Hugo (2011) English Film Review- Martin Scorsese's first family film in 3D

When Martin Scorsese won the academy awards for ‘the Departed’, a crime thriller, I was overwhelmed. It was a fantastic film. A couple of years later, he once again teamed up with Leo for ‘Shutter Island’ a psychological thriller and that too was the highest grossing film of the year. This year it’s Hugo. Based on the novel ‘The invention of Hugo Cabret’ by Brian Selznick, ‘Hugo’ is a touchy tale of a child and his dream of invention. John Logan’s screenplay and the current craze of using 3D technology have created this ok film for people of all ages. And most importantly it is Martin Scorsese’s first film for the family, which means he can be called a ‘debutante’ for this category of films?

It's a routine life made mundane with deals. But this is only from the outside. From the inside, this is the secret story of a man who is a schemer, a manipulator… a terrorist.

In one such ordinary deal-striking tour to another city, our protagonist carries with him the weight of a conspiracy. The mission – blasting off a building with a bomb. The setting – a dilapidated garage behind the victim's house. The target– a minister. The victim – his mistress. As per the plan of action, he stays at a hotel and maintains his regular work schedule but furtively carries out the procedure of a bomb blast. Like an ably trained terrorist, he has learnt his codes well. He meets the man who is to supply him with the bomb, carefully takes the object of obliteration and plants it in the garage.

The next day, he meets his comrade in crime and hands over his cell phone to him. This fellow terrorist will dial a number from the phone at ten minutes past ten on the dot and ignite the bomb. The building will be set ablaze and two lives will be done away with in no time. While the protagonist waits for the fateful moment of his mission, he returns to his unsuspected customary life as a seller of x-ray machines. He is at a meeting at ten in the night, striking deals, waiting with baited breath for the resonance of explosion. It's ten past ten… the bomb is about to explode, but nothing happens. Nothing was meant to be!

Come to read the x-ray plate of protagonist's mind now… look into his thought process… you will see a conniver par excellence… who has given his dull life a twist and his dreary work a thrill. No, he is not an "ordinary" terrorist… but an out-of-the-ordinary master-plotter, who contrives a new plot in each of his tours. The mission – to add spice to his life with just a plot inspired from a Hollywood film he has seen. The setting – any darned city that he tours. The target- to kill the boredom in his work. The victim – well, none!
