Hans Vermeersch & Rajhans Orchestra | Europan & Indian Cross-Genre Music Composer, Conductor, Performing Artist from Belgium

Hans Vermeersch Rajhans Orchestra & Ensemble | WBRi ExclusiveAs a young boy, Hans Vermeersch used to hear music on the radio and on records, and not content with listening to music composed and performed by others, he decided to create his own music reflecting emotions his own way.

Later, after a visit to India, hans realized that a lot of Indian sub-continental principles in music were identical to those of 17th / 18th Century European music. Hans was heavily involved in 17th and early 18th century European music at that time. He approached Satyatjit Ray for a few days in 1989 with a plan for a multi-cultural orchestra. Ray was enthusiastic, and with his Ray's help and advice Hans went on a search across India and established the fabulous Rajhans Orchestra.

Hans is a true world-class and world-music composer with a long and growing list of fascinating concertos and compositions with both European and Indian instrumentation. Read all about Hans, listen to his music and watch music videos »

Bengali Rabindra Sangeet | Nandini Mukherjee

Nandini Mukherjee is an experienced practitioner of Rabidrasangeet (songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore). She trained under Amar Lahiri, an outstanding exponent of the varied styles of the genre, and a disciple of Subinoy Roy. Earlier, Nandini underwent formal training in Hindustani classical music at Geetabithi founded by Subinoy Roy.

Nandini believes that the essence of Rabindrasangeet lies not only in its poetry and inimitable musical style but also in its unmatched emotional appeal. Her belief echoes Tagore himself, who, by characterizing his music as Bhavsangeet, sought to emphasize emotion over technique. He therefore classified his compositions in terms of their emotional appeal to people as Puja (devotion), Prem (love), Prakriti (nature) and Swadesh (patriotism), and not as the different classical or folk forms of music from which he drew inspiration.

Being Bhavsangeet, Rabindrasangeet has a universal appeal, transcending barriers of language and nationality. The cause of universality is furthered by Tagore's unfettered acceptance of musical styles from lands faraway and near, which he synthesized and harmonized to constitute his own, inimitable brand of music.

It is in continuance of this pursuit that Nandini's renditions have been accompanied by narration in English.

Nandini performs lives at venues in Bangalore and Kolkata.

Jana Gana Mana | National Anthem Of India | Free MP3 Download | Min. Ext. Affairs, Govt. of India | Collective Vocal Version

The song "Jana Gana Mana" in Sanskrit / Stylized Bengali, written and composed by Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, the only composer whose compositions are the National Anthems of two countries today (Bangladesh & India), was adopted by the constituent Assembly as the National anthem of India on January 24, 1950. The song was however  first performed much earlier Dec 27, 1911, at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress. The complete song consists of five stanzas. The first stanza alone constitutes the full version of the national anthem, as follows :

Jana gana mana adhinayaka jaya he
Bharata bhagya vidhata
Punjab Sindhu Gujarat Maaratha
Dravida Utkal Banga
Vindhya Himachal Yamuna Ganga
Uchchala Jaladhi Taranga
Tava shubha name jage
Tava shubha ashish maange
Gahe tava jaya gatha
Jana gana mangala dayak jaya he
Bharata bhagya vidhata
Jaya he, Jaya he, Jaya he
Jaya jaya jaya jaya he.

The playing time of the National Anthem is approximately 52 seconds

The following is Tagore’s own English translation rendering of the stanza:

Thou art the rulers of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India’s destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Panjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal:
It echoes in the hills of the vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Yammuna and Ganga
And is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India’s destiny,
Victory, victory, victory to thee.

The Indian Embassy, Lisbon, Portugal, has made available the complete Indian national anthem for free listening and download in MP3 format.
