Haridwar-Rishikesh (India)

We had spent our days well among the hills and the mist of Uttarakhand and now it was time for us to descend to the plains once again, this time to Haridwar, one of the holiest places of India that all devoted Hindus visit once in their life time.

This is considered to be the place where the river Ganga enters the plain which we all know geographically as the ‘gangetic plain.’ Har ki Pauri is the main spot where every evening gets turned to a land of lights with both the banks of the river being lit up and thousands of devotees gathering around, taking part in the aarti (evening prayers) by either taking a dip to clean away all the sins or floating diyas (earthen lamps) on the river with all their prayers and wishes to the mighty Ganges. Quite a beautiful scene actually!!

THE DEVIPUR EXPERIMENT--FOLLOW UP WORKSHOP ON 11TH JULY 2010

It was a overcast Sunday morning. It was not raining though. The Ichhapur Headquarter of the Shevashram was as usual busy—patients flocked into the low cost medical facility, guardians waited into the waiting hutments for their day-scholar wards undergoing Sunday classes, the inmates were busy with their daily chores, some were cleaning the yards, some washing their clothes and spreading them on a piece of green field to dry in the open air.

Sukharanjan and Shyamal, two representative from the Devipur village, who are spearheading the movement there, had already reached the Ichhapur Ashram from Devipur on 10th July and had initiated the discussions with the Ashram authorities. As per their reports, since the last workshop they have achieved the followings:

Joan of Arc (Orleans, France)

Michigan, July 16, 2010: At the point where the Loire River flows southeast leaving behind its northward coast, lies the beautiful and historic city of Orleans.

Time travel in Montreal, Canada - A trevelogue by Dipanwita Bhattacharyya

Montreal, Canada
Montreal, Canada - An eclectic mix of the old and new (C) Dipanwita Bhattacharyya

Boston, July 12, 2010: As our car crawls into rush hour Montreal, the chic city crowds around us—beautifully dressed women clicking their high heels down cobblestone streets, shoppers stopping to listen to a whimsically dressed musician playing his accordion in front of the famed Ogilvy’s store, locals and tourists toasting the July warmth with a glass of wine in Parisian sidewalk cafes. And all I can think of is if the 28 jars of Gerber baby food and almost an entire Barnes & Noble collection of Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh videos in my suitcase would last the entire trip!
Well, that’s what happens when you have a 16-month-old in the back doing his best to squirm his way out of the car seat, voicing his protest in a shrill mélange of “gagas”, “waaahhhs, and “eeeiiis”.

The Forbidden City (Beijing-China)

Michigan: July 09, 2010

Beijing isn’t a city where sightseeing can be a major attraction, more so because of its immediate neighbour ‘the great wall’ that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Even then we found the city to be a fascinating metropolis, rich with history, heritage and culture, now shining brightly on the world map as the 2008 Olympic venue.
