Shashika
Mooruth was born and educated in the Republic of South Africa. Till

her childhood, she performed in many local concerts around South Africa.
At the age of 12 her talent was recognized by the legendary Kishore
Kumar who invited her to sing in his concert in Durban, South
Africa. Kishore-da labeled her as a singer ‘born in the wrong country’
and advised her father to send her to Bombay to train and become a
playback singer! Shashika has also accompanied Shri Mahendra Kapoor and
Pandit Hrdayanath Mangeshkar on stage.
A science graduate from University of South Africa, Shashika has
also studied Speech and Drama at Trinity College of Music, London and
the South African Guild of Speech and Drama Teachers’ Association.
In 1987
she enrolled for the degree course in Hindustani Music at the Bhartiya
Vidya Bhavan with the intention of returning to South Africa to teach
music, but soon realized the vastness of the music field and hence
settled in India permanently.
In 1995, she was honored at the World Hindu Conference in South
Africa for her contribution to Indian music.
She has travelled several times to twenty five countries with her
devotional music and is always in demand for her unique presentation
style.
Many of her bhajan albums produced by herself are available on the
net or her website www.urjamusic.com.
Says
Shashika, “I love to experiment with different styles and therefore on
the commercial front I have rendered my voice in devotional, pop, filmi,
semi-classical and even techno compositions. Last year I decided to
dedicate more time to commercial music in Mumbai and hence came my first
song in Hindi cinema. I penned and recorded a piece in Western voice
for a title song by Adnan Sami for a film titled Ek Second Jo Zindagi
Badal De with music by Saawan Kumar Saawan. I hope to make a
contribution to the music world in this lifetime.”
