The Crucial Moment - A short story by Dr. Ratan Lal Basu

Dr.Ratan Lal BasuTHE CRUCIAL MOMENT

Short Story by Dr. Ratanlal Basu

The crucial moment – lurking menacingly behind the overhanging veil of smog, stretching slowly out its awesome tentacles like a gigantic octopus and waiting patiently to pounce upon its prey. I’m ensnared, would in no time be drawn into the fold of the monster. The horror shoots up my spine, oozes out and encompasses the ambience. It’s there in the pale yellow of the building, wavering against the mellow dusk light beyond the veil of smog. I’m inescapably caught like a fish hooked tightly. Like the poor fish I would writhe, squirm, jump, circle and struggle by all conceivable means to ineffectually let go of the hook and more I struggle more firmly would the hook get riveted in me. As a last resort I might probably try to break the line by running away fast and the demon, like a deft angler, would give line until I wear off all my ability to move any further and then the final pull would drag me along limp into the fathomless horror. I could have dived into it right away and rid the agony of waiting, but the abiding horror failed me. It’s silly, I thought; I’ve brains unlike the fish and I know fully well I’ve to encounter it eventually ...

Hans Vermeersch Rajhans Orchestra & Ensemble | WBRi ExclusiveAs a young boy, Hans Vermeersch used to hear music on the radio and on records, and not content with listening to music composed and performed by others, he decided to create his own music reflecting emotions his own way.

Later, after a visit to India, hans realized that a lot of Indian sub-continental principles in music were identical to those of 17th / 18th Century European music. Hans was heavily involved in 17th and early 18th century European music at that time. He approached Satyatjit Ray for a few days in 1989 with a plan for a multi-cultural orchestra. Ray was enthusiastic, and with his Ray's help and advice Hans went on a search across India and established the fabulous Rajhans Orchestra.

Hans is a true world-class and world-music composer with a long and growing list of fascinating concertos and compositions with both European and Indian instrumentation. Read all about Hans, listen to his music and watch music videos »

MuZik StreeT
Kolkata Bangla Rock Blues Fusion Band

MuZik StreeT as a band was born at Asansol, West Bengal, India. The initial line up contained 7 members and then as of now they have concreted down to 5 (the usual stuff)! Music as a full time career option was not really appreciated by guardians of the band members, yet overcoming all odds and obstacles the band is still alive and rocking since the past 5 years. In this journey they have had some hindrances but music was to win all of them and that is exactly what happened! UIT, Burdwan was the first competition that they appeared in and guess what, they won! To add to that the band at that point in time was a mere 7 days old group! This was followed by a series of events like Muzik Street was ranked finalists in Band-E-Mataram II (Kolkata). After the talent hunt, the band was covered by the media, including Aamar 106.2 FM, Tara Muzik, S-FM 93.5, Sangeet Bangla and others. Till date the band has performed live in places like Kolkata, Siliguri, Midnapur, Maldah, Durgapur, Burdwan, Asansol and other places in West Bengal.

Bengali Rabindra Sangeet | Nandini Mukherjee

Nandini Mukherjee is an experienced practitioner of Rabidrasangeet (songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore). She trained under Amar Lahiri, an outstanding exponent of the varied styles of the genre, and a disciple of Subinoy Roy. Earlier, Nandini underwent formal training in Hindustani classical music at Geetabithi founded by Subinoy Roy.

Nandini believes that the essence of Rabindrasangeet lies not only in its poetry and inimitable musical style but also in its unmatched emotional appeal. Her belief echoes Tagore himself, who, by characterizing his music as Bhavsangeet, sought to emphasize emotion over technique. He therefore classified his compositions in terms of their emotional appeal to people as Puja (devotion), Prem (love), Prakriti (nature) and Swadesh (patriotism), and not as the different classical or folk forms of music from which he drew inspiration.

Being Bhavsangeet, Rabindrasangeet has a universal appeal, transcending barriers of language and nationality. The cause of universality is furthered by Tagore's unfettered acceptance of musical styles from lands faraway and near, which he synthesized and harmonized to constitute his own, inimitable brand of music.

It is in continuance of this pursuit that Nandini's renditions have been accompanied by narration in English.

Nandini performs lives at venues in Bangalore and Kolkata.
