Clusters Development in India a Tool for Sustainable Growth of Micro and Small Enterprises

New Delhi, March 23, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / PIB-India) Clusters are regional agglomerations of Micro and Small Enterprises including other stakeholders, having common challenges, common bottlenecks, common opportunities, common developmental agenda, in a specific area of business activity, related to each other through knowledge & other economic linkages. The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), has adopted the cluster development approach as a key strategy for enhancing the productivity and competitiveness as well as capacity building of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) and their collectives in the country. The cluster development initiatives have evolved over a period of time and are now being implemented under “Micro and Small Enterprises – Cluster Development Programme” (MSE-CDP) scheme.

The MSME sector has been recognized as the engine for growth in India. As per statistics compiled by International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Gross Domestic Product [based on purchasing-power-parity (PPP)] of India is 3,862.009 billion (Current international) dollars in 2010. The Indian MSME sector contributes 8% of the country’s GDP, 45% of the manufactured output and 40% of its exports. The MSMEs provide employment to about 60 million persons through 26 million enterprises. Therefore, at 8% contribution in the GDP, the contribution of MSME sector is 308.96 billion dollars. Keeping in view the huge contribution of the sector and its growth rate which is higher than the overall industrial growth rate, there is a need to complement the efforts of the sector by policy support, advisory and extension services including setting up of specialized knowledge and innovation based institutions in collaboration with private sector.

New Delhi, March 1, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / PIB-India)  India’s search for economic and strategic space in changing world order resulted in ‘Look East’ Policy. The bedrock of this policy is to foster economic and security cooperation with our east neighboring countries. Believing in philosophy of the Look East Policy, India is aiming at leveraging its economic and strategic interest by greater integration with East and South-east Asia. It is also an attempt to forge closer and deeper economic, social and institutional assimilation with its eastern neighbours. Keeping this in mind, India signed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), which now provides a land bridge to connect with member countries. ASEAN is not merely an external economic policy; it is also a strategic shift in India’s vision of the world and India’s place in the evolving global economy with intent to become India’s partner in trade and investment which is a significant factor in our policy paradigm.

Cochin, Feb 14, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio / PIB-India) The largest and India’s first global hub terminal, the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam off Cochin coast, Kerala was dedicated to the Nation by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India here today. The foundation stone of the terminal was laid by the Prime Minister six years ago in January 2005. Built at a cost of more than Rs. 3000 crores including all the infrastructure facilities, this terminal is expected to bring down the freight cost of India’s international trade substantially.

Before the launch of ICTT ,Vallarpadam, a small idyllic island on the Vembanad Lake with a serene atmosphere, was famous as major Catholic Pilgrim Centre. The historic church of Our Lady of Ransom was built by Portuguese missionaries in 1524. It is said that the missionaries discovered a painting of the Lady of Ransom and later in a dream, they were asked to establish a church at Vallarpadam. Many miracles have been attributed to the church. It is believed that people are being saved from accidents at sea. This Church forms part of the diocese of Verapoly and revered by Catholics as a very sacred church. The original building was destroyed by floods in the 17th century and rebuilt later. The present building is said to have built in 1676. Today rightfully the island is going to be famous for its global positioning in transshipment trade.

Peyaji Hocche Na ! Onion Prices Go Through The Roof In India - Buy American Onions In India

Washington DC, Jan 20, 2011 (Washington Bangla Radio) As you know, Allium cepa is mightily expensive in India these days - so much so that a friend of mine reports the price of onions, beer and gasoline are identical in India at this time.

Various theories are going around to try to explain the causes of onion-price inflation - ranging from too much rain drowning the poor bulbs still underground to greedy warehouse operators holding back supplies to increase prices. The mighty Government of India has stepped in and banned any exports of onions from India - I do not know if this is applicable to carry-on baggage on airplanes containing home-cooked meals to enjoy on the flights back.
